An Olympian and his dad have died after a mystery fire at a supposedly abandoned hotel . Berkin Usta, 25,who represented Turkey at the Winter Olympics , died in the blaze in his home city of Uludag. He had been staying at the Kervansaray Hotel when the fire broke out . The hotel had its accommodation permit cancelled in January, the local governor's office said, but 12 staff were present at the time of the blaze. Several were taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. It remains unclear why Usta and his father were staying at the hotel. And prosecutors are now investigating the two deaths. Bursa Mayor Mustafa Bozbey stated that the blaze started in the cafeteria at around 5.30am. Usta's mother was also said to be at the hotel - but there has been no reports about her condition. Fire crews took less than two hours to bring the fire under control. But by then the upper floors had been virtually destroyed. Turkey's sports minister Osman Askin Bak said: "I learned with deep sorrow that our national athlete Berkin Usta and his father Yahya Usta lost their lives in the fire that broke out in the hotel in Uludag." Team Turkey added: “We have learned with deep sorrow that our national skier Berkin Usta, who represented our country at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. "And the Erzurum 2017 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, and his father, former national skier Yahya Usta, passed away due to a hotel fire in Uludağ, Bursa." "We have learned about the tragic death of Turkish Olympic skier Berkin Usta, and his father, in a terrible fire,” said the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach. "Berkin lived his Olympic dream by competing at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 in Alpine skiing. Our thoughts are with their family and friends." Mayor Bozbey told local news outlet Halk TV, in a translated interview, that ski instructors had been inside the hotel despite it being determined to have "deficiencies" by the local authorities. He said: “We conveyed these to the relevant parties. Our teams reached it in about three minutes. It is said that the fire started in the cafeteria. It is a sad event. "The fact that it is not in season really brings up an issue that we need to think about. In order for such fires not to occur, common living areas must be constantly inspected, necessary actions must be taken, if they are to be closed, they must be closed, but the deficiencies must be resolved urgently. We have seen this once again."
