On This Day In 2012: Over a decade ago, Sachin Tendulkar cemented his legacy as one of cricket’s most complete batters by reaching an exclusive landmark. Widely regarded as the sport’s greatest-ever batter, the Master Blaster is also cricket’s all-time leading scorer.
In the twilight phase of his career, Tendulkar registered a jaw-dropping feat previously deemed near-impossible. He scored his 100th international century while competing in the 2012 Asia Cup.
A 38-year-old Tendukar smashed 114 runs when India faced Bangladesh in the tournament’s group stage on this day in 2012. It was his 49th ODI century and, interestingly, only his first against Bangladesh in the 50-over format.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 100th international ton was more than just a personal milestone. The landmark hundred was a testament to Tendulkar’s unwavering dedication towards cricket.
The Master Blaster had to wait over a year after his 99th century to register the feat. Tendulkar scored his 99th ton against South Africa in Nagpur during the 2011 World Cup.
The Asia Cup match began with Bangladesh winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Sachin Tendulkar opened India’s innings alongside Gautam Gambhir. He duly milked Bangladesh’s bowling attack to finally go past a landmark that hardly anyone knew existed before he got close to it.
The landmark also relieved the Indian batter from the tremendous pressure he put on himself in a frenzied build-up that lasted a year. He sped through Bangladesh’s bowlers to score 80 runs in 102 deliveries.
Tendulkar, however, required another 36 before taking his 100th run off a delivery from Shakib Al Hasan.
Once the pressure was lifted, Sachin Tendulkar belatedly took charge and hit consecutive boundaries off Shahadat Hossain before nicking a ball straight into the keeper’s hands. His departure came immediately after Suresh Raina’s brisk innings had ended.
He scored 114 runs in 147 deliveries, smashing 12 boundaries and one six. While Tendulkar got his 100th international century, it wasn’t one of his better hundreds. In fact, Tendulkar’s knock against Bangladesh was his second-slowest innings of 100-plus in ODIs. It ended up restricting India’s progress as they ended up at 289/5.
In the second innings, the Bangladesh trio of Tamim Iqbal, Jahurul Islam and Nasir Hossain scored half-centuries. Another couple of 40-plus knocks from Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim saw the Tigers complete the chase with four balls remaining.
They won the fixture by five wickets as Shakib was named Player of the Match for his quick-fire 31-ball 49.
