The backdrop to the West Indies’ campaign was far from smooth. Despite having multiple internal issues, they kicked off their T20I World Cup run with a dominant win over England.
Throughout the tournament, Darren Sammy and his men instilled fear in the opposing bowlers with their power-hitting abilities. They exhibited moments of tactical brilliance and crucial bowling performances. Blending their raw power with strategic awareness, the West Indies sailed into the tournament’s final where they locked horns with England again.
The high-octane affair began with the West Indies winning the toss and electing to field first in Kolkata. Samuel Badree’s spin kept the English batters humble from the get-go.
He dismissed Jason Roy in the second ball of play before scalping England skipper Eoin Morgan’s wicket in the fifth over. The fast-bowling duo of Dwayne Bravo and Carlos Brathwaite also found crucial wickets, not allowing England to find a rhythm. Joe Root smashed a 36-ball 54 to help his team put up a respectable 155/9 total.
West Indies headed into the chase brimming with confidence, however, their momentum was quickly halted by England’s bowling attack.
Joe Root dismissed both Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle in the second over. Next, Lendl Simmons lost his wicket to David Willey in the following over.
All of a sudden West Indies found themselves at 11/3. Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo didn’t let the pressure get to them as they formed a partnership, anchoring the innings.
Bravo added 25 runs before departing whereas Samuels scored an unbeaten 66-ball 85. The Caribbean side required 19 runs from the last six balls of play to seal a win.
Carlos Braithwaite stole the show in the final’s closing moments. He launched a breathtaking assault against Ben Stokes in the last over, smashing four sixes in four consecutive deliveries to win the World Cup crown for the West Indies.
