AN Irishman who sadly died in a swim tragedy while holidaying in Malta has been remembered as "a truly lovely character".
Noel Ryan, 76, from Athlone in Co Westmeath reportedly got into difficulty at a popular holiday spot in the seaside town of St Julian's.
He had been swimming near the Cavalieri Hotel, in St Julian’s Bay, when he got into difficulty.
Police rushed to the area at around 12.45pm on Tuesday afternoon and the man received medical attention on shore.
However, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Tributes have since been pouring in for the "genuinely kind and warm" man, who was remember by one pal as "one of the most cherished people in Athlone".
They said: "Noelie was warm, funny, and a truly lovely character. He was a true gentleman, and one of the most cherished people in Athlone. His passing is a deep loss to everyone who had the joy of knowing him.
"Noelie had that rare and beautiful magic — the way he could lift people’s spirits with nothing more than his humour, kindness, and presence.
"He loved his family, his town and its people dearly. And he’ll be missed on every street corner, for the chats, his story telling, and that easy way he had of making everyone feel seen.
"That was Noelie’s magic — a genuinely kind and warm person, who touched the lives of all who crossed his path. May he rest in peace."
Another friend said: "As a recent neighbour, and long-time friend in the local rugby club he touched us all with his humour and vast knowledge of people, whether locally, or in many many parts of the country."
Another added: "We have great memories of banter and craic with him a true gentleman. May he rest in peace."
A fourth said: "He posessed a great sense of humour and boundless wit.
"He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him."
'GREAT CHARACTER'
Buccaneers Rugby Football Club, which Noel was a member of and had played for during his younger years, also recalled his fun spirit.
They said: "He was one of the club's great characters who loved banter and a bit of friendly craic.
"After his playing days were over, he remained a constant around the club where his wit and support will be greatly missed."
Funeral arrangements for Noel will be confirmed at a later date.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
A spokesperson said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
