Back-to-back feels quite nice for Oratory senior Henry Bolster.
The Bucknell commit shot a 1 over 72 to win by one stroke and claim individual medalist honors for the second straight year Tuesday at the UCIAC Tournament at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield.
Westfield freshman Chase Simms had a solid performance with a 2 over 73 to finish solo second and fellow junior teammate Nick Benson (4 over 75) placed third. Johnson junior Joseph Melchionna and Westfield senior Jack Paterson both tied for fourth with 6 over 77s.
“It was a solid round as the wind was a consistent 15 mph, and I knew that I had to play boring golf the majority of the day, playing to the big part of the fairways and hitting to the middle of the greens. Pars were a win on every hole. I wasn’t able to take advantage of some good drives but knocked in two good birdie putts on the 8th and 14th holes,” said Bolster.
“Going down the stretch, I was just trying to stay in the moment and embrace the opportunity. Last year I would get so caught up on what would or wouldn’t happen and changed my mindset this year - focusing on the ‘right now’, and ‘whatever happens happens’. Seeing the two Westfield golfers on my tail, I knew I had to keep doing my thing and make them catch me. One being a freshman and one being a junior, I knew that I had the most experience and that’s what I relied on down the stretch.”
Last year, Bolster shot an even-par 71, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 538-yard 12th hole, to finish three strokes ahead of then Westfield senior captain James Dunn (3 over 74) to win the individual title.
Host Westfield (314) won the team title for the second straight year, winning by six strokes over Johnson (320).
Other Westfield scores (players seeded higher than five are not counted towards team score) include: senior Toby Zippler (82), freshman Henry Blake (82), and senior Brody Esler (84).
Junior Ben Barshtak (80) and Benson (75) were not part of the team total score.
Summit (327), Cranford (331), and Scotch Plains-Fanwood (338) rounded out the top five respectively.
Last season, the Blue Devils (308) won the team title, winning by eight strokes over rival Oratory (316).
