No. 5 Oregon held on to third place after the third round of the NCAA women’s golf championship.
The Ducks closed with seven birdies to one bogey over the final four holes to finish Sunday 3-under 285 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. It was the best round of the weekend for Oregon, which is 2-under entering the final round of strike play.
“That was a big finish for us today,” Oregon coach Derek Radley said. “We were playing solid golf but weren’t putting a bunch of red numbers on the scorecard early on. That’s a difficult finishing stretch to the golf course so to see those birdies start falling to end the round was important for our positioning on the leaderboard and also was big for our team from a confidence standpoint.”
One of three teams under par for the tournament, Oregon is 21 strokes back of No. 1 Stanford (23 under) and six back of No. 11 Northwestern (8 under) for second,
The top eight teams following Monday’s final round advance to match play, which would be a third time in four seasons for Oregon. The Ducks are 10 strokes ahead of eighth-place South Carolina (8 over) and 13 shots ahead of ninth-place Arizona State (11 over).
“We’re pleased with where we are after three rounds but know we still have to come out here and take care of business tomorrow,” Radley said. “We’re going to continue to be aggressive and try to put together our best round yet to advance into match play.”
Suvichaya Vinijchaitham shot 2-under 70 on Sunday and leads Oregon at 3-under through three rounds, tied for eighth individually.
Ting-Hsuan Huang shot 1-under 71 on Sunday and is 2-under for the tournament.
Kiara Romero and Anika Varma each shot even par on Sunday. Romero is 2-over for the tournament.
Oregon will be in the final pairing for Monday’s final round of stroke play, teeing off at No. 1 with Stanford and Northwestern at 12:51 p.m. PT.
