Ospreys survive late scare to move into URC play-off places
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
The Ospreys survived a late Connacht comeback to secure a 43-40 victory and move into the play-off places of the United Rugby Championship. This was a vitally important victory for Mark Jones' side who scored six tries courtesy of Keelan Giles (twice), Daniel Kasende (twice), Kieran Hardy and Jack Walsh while Dan Edwards kicked 13 points. Connacht left Swansea with a try bonus point of their own as Finn Treacy, Paul Boyle, Dave Heffernan, Piers O'Connor, Ben Murphy and Shamus Hurley-Langton crossed for tries. Josh Ioane and JJ Hanrahan also contributed 10 points between them from the kicking tee. The hosts didn't make the best of starts as Connacht claimed the games first try after just 2 minutes when Treacy scored at the corner. Connacht looked extremely dangerous with ball in hand with once-capped All Blacks outside-half Josh Ioane causing problems with his running and passing game. On once occasion he sliced through the Ospreys defence before offloading to Hurley-Langton Connacht's second try. Ioane added the extras but the Ospreys hit back for a try of their own. Off the back of a dominant scrum a looping pass from Edwards found Kasende who offloaded to Jack Walsh from the point of contact. Walsh then passed inside for Giles to score with Edwards converting from the touchline. The Ospreys pack now had the bit between their teeth with the scrum a big weapon for the hosts. And it laid the foundation for the Ospreys second try after Edwards and Walsh combined to put Kasende over. The Ospreys were on fire and were soon celebrating their second try after a break from Walsh allowed Kardy to run in unopposed from 30 metres out. Jones' side had the bonus point in the bag by half-time after Kasende won a foot race, after a speculative punt upfield from Walsh, to score. Edwards smashed over the conversion from the touchline to send the hosts into the changing rooms with a commanding 31-14 lead. The Ospreys continued to dominate after the break with Evardi Boshoff sending Walsh down the touchline. Walsh offloaded to Sam Parry who then found Giles with Tristan Davies proceeding to put Walsh over for their fifth try. To their credit Connacht refused to throw in the towel and claimed a try back as Heffernan powered over from short range off the back of a well-worked driving lineout which Hanrahan converted. This game was far from over after a lovely backs move from the visitors put O'Conor over at the corner. Hanrahan added the extras and all of a sudden the Ospreys were only leading by 10 points. After what looked like a nasty injury to in-form centre Keiran Williams the Ospreys could have lost all momentum but they regained it after Kasende intercepted a pass in his own 22 before running in unopposed for a try. But Connacht kept coming back at the Ospreys and after a period of pressure Murphy crashed over for their fourth try which Hanrahan converted. This game turned on its head after a cracking break from Connacht scrum-half Matthew Devine, who raced clear 50 metres, put the Irish province on the front foot. The ball spread wide for Hurley-Langton to score which made it 43-40 to the Ospreys with just 10 minutes remaining. The Irish province threw everything at the Welsh club in the dying stages of this game and even turned down a shot at goal which would have drawn the game. But a tremendous defensive set from the Ospreys ensured they moved to seventh on the URC table.
