NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio –
OVI, felony fleeing: I-480
An officer at 8:39 p.m. on Jan. 30 clocked a pickup truck driving eastbound on I-480 at 86 mph, well above the 60-mph speed limit.
The officer began pursuing the truck using the cruiser’s lights and siren, but the truck continued eastbound toward Great Northern Boulevard. The truck had a broken taillight, was weaving out of its lane, and changed lanes several times without signaling. The driver exited onto Great Northern Boulevard, stopped briefly at a red light, and the officer used his cruiser’s PA system to order the driver to stop. However, the truck pulled away when the light turned green but eventually stopped a short distance away.
When the vehicle stopped, the driver initially failed to obey orders to place his hands outside the vehicle, and the officer radioed for assistance. Eventually, the driver exited the truck but was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glassy, and he smelled of an alcoholic beverage, according to a police report. However, the man denied drinking or using any medication. He refused to take field sobriety tests, and he was charged with fleeing and eluding, a felony, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Inside the truck, officers found a marijuana smoking pipe, a small plastic bag containing suspected marijuana, and an open container of an alcoholic beverage, according to the police report.
Additional charges included refusing an OVI test, speeding, failure to drive within marked lanes, failure to signal a lane change, broken taillight, and having an open container in a motor vehicle.
Theft: Great Northern Mall
Officers responded at 3:55 p.m. on Feb. 4 to Dick’s Sporting Goods after a store loss prevention officer reported that two women were in a dressing room area and employees suspected they were concealing merchandise.
The women had taken multiple items into the dressing room. One of the women left the dressing room area briefly wearing some store items and then returned. While she was out of the fitting room, employees entered and recovered numerous security tags that had been cut off clothing, according to a police report.
When the suspects attempted to leave the store, an officer stopped them. One of the women claimed she urgently needed to use the restroom, but she was refused and handcuffed. When the women’s outer coats were removed, officers found they were wearing multiple layers of clothing from the store including Under Armour and Adidas brand items.
Eight security sensors were recovered from the dressing room area. The value of the items totaled more than $365, according to a police report.
The women were charged with misdemeanor theft and told they would be charged with trespassing if they returned to the store.
A resident on Feb. 5 reported she was the apparent victim of identity theft as she had received a Verizon wireless bill for more than $9,606.
The female resident explained that she was not a Verizon customer, but someone apparently used her personal information to open a Verizon account with three cell phones on which numerous international calls were made in January to Honduras. The calls originated from Canada and New York state, according to a police report.
The victim was advised to contact the credit bureaus and inform them that her information was stolen.
