The father of Paddy Jackson may be set to obtain a final assessment on the level of compensation he is to receive over false claims of offering to pay off the complainant at the rugby star’s rape trial. Peter Jackson has already secured judgment against former Irish reality TV personality Danielle Meagher in a libel action centred on unfounded Twitter allegations. Mr Jackson attended the High Court in Belfast today for a further hearing to deal with her bid to have that verdict set aside. Although Ms Meagher’s application was not formally dismissed, the judge indicated that he was only adjourning proceedings until next month to ensure she had been properly notified about the anticipated outcome. Master Harvey stated: “My provisional view is that this is headed for an assessment of damages.” The tweet at the centre of the case was posted in 2018 after former Ireland and Ulster rugby players Paddy Jackson, 33, and Stuart Olding, 32, were unanimously acquitted of raping the same woman. Both sportsmen denied any criminal wrongdoing throughout their high-profile trial in Belfast. In 2019 judgment was entered against Ms Meagher, also known as Danielle Collins, at the High Court when no defence was filed on her behalf. She subsequently issued a statement vowing to fight the outcome reached in the case. Ms Meagher had sought to have the judgment set aside on the basis that proceedings were not properly served on her. It is understood that she also denied posting the defamatory content. But with no submissions made on her behalf today, the case is now expected to advance to a determination on the appropriate level of any award. In a statement issued after today’s review, Mr Jackson said: “I welcome the chance to finally see my case listed to assess damages “Following today's positive hearing before the Master I am hopeful that the attempts by the defendant to have my case set aside will soon end.” His solicitor, Kevin Winters, added: “It's been a long journey to get to this point for Mr Jackson. “He is greatly encouraged by the court’s assessment on the various outstanding applications.” For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here and sign up to our daily newsletter here.
