In Lahore, dozens of cricket fans from Pakistan have thrown tomatoes at donkeys that are marked with the names of players accused in the match-fixing scandal.
Chanting against captain Salman Butt and other members of the team, many protesters also acted as if they were hitting the donkeys with shoes during their demonstration on the streets of Lahore.
“It’s shameful and unacceptable,” reported cricket fan Manzoor Ahmad.
“We want them back; they deserve punishment,” he added.
According to Pakistan’s press, the match-fixing controversy involving prominent cricketers represents a disgraceful betrayal for a nation already grappling with floods and terrorism, which holds the sport in high regard.
“Our cricketers were supposed to act as ambassadors for us during this challenging time; instead, they have stabbed us in the back,” it emphasized.
The press further noted, “The evidence seems indisputable, and we find ourselves portrayed to the world as cheaters and frauds once again,” while highlighting the sport’s “very uncertain future.”
“It seems the only path forward is to essentially start anew. We need to dismiss everyone, from the top down. Anything less, and the taint from these allegations will linger indefinitely.”
