Passenger Thought She Might Die 'Like in the Movies' When Man Allegedly Tried to Open Plane Door: Video
@Source: people.com
A plane passenger recorded the moment she thought she was going to die when another flyer allegedly tried to open the cabin door mid-flight. According to SWNS, Oore Fabunmi was flying on a TUI Airways flight from the Dominican Republic to London Gatwick Airport on June 29. Four hours into the flight, she saw a man suddenly running towards the front of the aircraft. “I remember just seeing him leave the row in front of me and run forward,” the 25-year-old told the outlet. “Next thing I heard was just screams coming from the front.” She added: “My first thought was that we were being hijacked and we might die — like in the movies.” Fabunmi claims the man tried to open one of the cabin doors. Luckily, other passengers managed to stop him and pin him down before crew members were able to detain the man. He sat with staff for the rest of the flight until he was escorted by police upon landing, according to Fabunmi. "A 68-year-old man was arrested for endangering an aircraft," a representative for Sussex police shared in a statement with PEOPLE. "After his detention it was clear the man was suffering with mental health issues." In Fabunmi’s video captured on board, several passengers are out of their seats and appear distressed before crews make an announcement. “There’s nothing to concern yourself about,” the crew member says over the intercom. “Please return to your seats.” In a second clip, another crew member, seemingly the pilot, reassures the passengers. “There’s nothing to worry about, everything’s under control,” he says. “But we do ask those who are not involved please return to your seats and let the cabin crew do their job and deal with the situation.” “Sorry to disturb you at this time, I know a lot of you are sleeping,” he adds. Fabunmi remembered interacting with the man who allegedly attempted to open the door before takeoff. “I got onto the plane with some friends I’d made on the holiday and he was actually sitting in one of their seats,” she recalled. “They asked him to move and he seemed confused about his ticket so I helped him find his seat.” She added: “He seemed alright after that until he started getting agitated halfway through the flight… He stood up on his seat, which I obviously thought was strange, and then he just ran to the doors.” The woman remembered the 68-year-old muttering something about his wife being on a cruise, both at his seat and later by the door. But other than that, she knew nothing about his motivations. “I think he clearly needed some help,” she said. “He did not seem mentally well.” Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Fabunmi went on to praise TUI Airways personnel for their quick actions and ability to keep the cabin calm. “The flight attendants were really good at keeping us informed and announcements were made explaining what had happened.” “It was such a nerve-wracking experience — it definitely made me think twice before flying again,” she added. TUI Airways did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
