Paul McGinley has taken to social media for damage control after his remarks about Rory McIlroy's Masters victory caused a stir among fans.
Commenting on Sky Sports about McIlroy's stunning win, McGinley observed that the golfer "isn't everybody's cup of tea" and is quite the "divides opinion", although he did commend the newly minted Grand Slam winner for his perseverance through tough times.
The comments landed poorly with some of the audience, leading to backlash against the former Ryder Cup captain on social media platforms, with critics targeting his choice of phrasing.
In response, McGinley took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to clarify his position. His intention had been to express a more positive message, but he admitted the execution was 'ham-fisted.', reports the Irish Mirror.
McGinley's tweet began with the acknowledgement: "Rory has been the most criticised golfer in the world over the past few years,".
Following this, he contended: "Winning was a human story of redemption against that backdrop."
He continued to explain his televised blunder and express his delight at McIlroy's accomplishment: "I tried to eloquate that but it came out in a ham-fisted way yesterday. Nobody more happy than me to see him win and complete the Slam."
McIlroy, 35, has indeed come under scrutiny in recent years for not clinching major titles when expectations were high. However, with his triumphant performance at Augusta National on Sunday, he laid those criticisms to rest.
In winning his fifth major championship, McIlroy has become only the sixth player ever to secure all four of golf's major prizes.
"It's a dream come true," McIlroy expressed following his triumph, "I have dreamt about that moment for as long as I can remember.
"Watching Tiger (Woods) here in 1997 do what he did, winning his first green jacket, I think that inspired so many of my generation to want to emulate what he did.
"It feels incredible. This is my 17th time here and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time.
"The last 10 years coming here with the burden of the grand slam on my shoulder and trying to achieve it, I wonder what we're going to talk about going into next year.
"I'm absolutely honoured, thrilled and proud to be able to call myself a Masters champion."
