PGA Championship: All 156 Golfers Ranked by Best Shot at Quail Hollow
@Source: newsweek.com
The second major championship of the season has arrived in the PGA Championship.Rory McIlroy won the Masters at Augusta National last month to complete the career grand slam. He is one of six players in history to accomplish that feat.The PGA Championship is at Quail Hollow, or as Jordan Spieth calls it, the Country Club of Rory McIlroy, since the Northern Irishman has been so successful there.Who has the best shot at hoisting the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday afternoon?Could Rory do something special and win his sixth major? He broke his major drought, so maybe there is some golf magic in the air.However, since 2011, only three players who won the Masters have gone on to win another major. Bubba Watson and Scottie Scheffler each went on to win another Green Jacket.Spieth is the third as he went on to win the 2015 U.S. Open and the 2017 Open Championship.Will McIlroy make more history in 2025? He and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler are easily the betting favorites, but how does the rest of the field stack up against them?Let's rank all 156 players this week on their chances to conquer Quail Hollow and win a $3.3 million check out of the $18.5 million purse.Now, without further ado, let's rank all 156 players in this year's PGA Championship.PGA Championship players ranked 156 to 136:Twenty PGA professionals across the United States qualified to play in the PGA Championship, and they will attempt to repeat Michael Block's feat in 2023.Did I mention that Block is in the field? He is not in this section, though, as his history in this tournament automatically pushes him up the rankings.Those in this area will get their shining moment on Thursday and Friday before the cut is made. They will likely not play the weekend at Quail Hollow, but it is still incredible they made it to this point.Here are the 21 players in this category: 156. Brian Berstol, 155. Brandon Bingaman, 154. Michael Kartrude, 153. Bob Sowards, 152. John Somers, 151. Larkin Gross, 150. Justin Hicks, 149. Rupe Taylor, 148. Timothy Wiseman, 147. Nic Ishee, 146. Bobby Gates, 145. Dylan Newman, 144. Ryan Lenahan, 143. Tyler Collet, 142. Jesse Droemer, 141. Greg Koch, 140. Eric Steger, 139. Tom Johnson, 138. Andre Chi, 137. John Caitlin, 136. Brian CampbellPGA Championship players ranked 135 to 115:The following 20 players are still considered long shots at this year's PGA Championship. Many of them are past their prime to win a major, but they are still names people recognize; if they get hot, they could have a chance to finish high on the leaderboard.This section also includes a few players who have won this season but have not proved themselves enough to rank higher on this list.Here are the 21 players in this section: 135. Jason Dufner, 134. Eugenio Chacarra 133. Patrick Fishburn, 132. Rafael Campos, 131. Nick Dunlap, 130. Richard Bland, 129. Luke Donald, 128. Padraig Harrington, 127. Garrick Higgo, 126. Michael Thorbjornsen, 125. Elvis Smylie, 124. Karl Vilips, 123. Jimmy Walker, 122. Lee Hodges, 121. Daniel van Tonder, 120. Adam Hadwin, 119. John Parry, 118. Tom Kim, 117. Chris Kirk, 116. Laurie Canter, 115. Beau HosslerPGA Championship players ranked 114 to 94:This group of players includes both younger and older players. Some, like Phil Mickelson, have even won the PGA Championship before, but they are just not in the form to do it in 2025. There are also some guys like Will Zalatoris and Nick Taylor who have been relatively quiet this season.Block is in this section because while he did finish T15 at Oak Hill in 2023, he has not made a cut on the PGA Tour since. Will he have another Cinderella moment or will he be left in 2023 with his Block party? It will be his ninth major championship of his career.Here are the next 21 players in this section: 114. Bud Cauley, 113. Cameron Young, 112. Christiaan Bezuidenhout, 111. Kevin Yu, 110. Rico Hoey, 109. Ryo Hisatsune, 108. Takumi Kanaya, 107. Martin Kaymer, 106. John Keefer, 105. Max McGreevy, 104. Victor Perez, 103. Will Zalatoris, 102. Austin Eckroat, 101. Nick Taylor, 100. Erik van Rooyen, 99. Matt Wallace, 98. Sami Valimaki, 97. Michael Block, 96. Phil Mickelson, 95. Shaun Micheel, 94. Justin Lower PGA Championship players ranked 93-74This next set of players is full of talented names that could do something this week at Quail Hollow, but are not up to par this week. They could do something crazy, but this season has been inconsistent.Here are the 20 players in this ranking: 93. Matthieu Pavon, 92. Thriston Lawrence, 91. Marco Penge, 90. Eric Cole, 89. Cameron Davis, 88. Patton Kizzire, 87. Jake Knapp, 86. J.T. Poston, 85. Alex Noren, 84. Jacob Bridgeman, 83. Dustin Johnson, 82. Stephan Jaeger, 81. Davis Riley, 80. Sam Stevens, 79. Ben Griffin, 78. Max Greyserman, 77. Ryan Gerard, 76. Ryan Fox, 75. Matthew Fitzpatrick, 74. Thomas DetryPGA Championship players ranked 73-53Now we're getting into the people who will play the weekend and get a check. Are they all contenders? No, but these guys could put together a strong week of golf.Players ranked in this section: 73. Matt McCarty, 72. Joe Highsmith, 71. Thomas Detry, 70. Nico Echavarria, 69. Patrick Rodgers, 68. Tom Hoge, 67. Taylor Moore, Seamus Power, 66. Keita Nakajima, 65. Jhonattan Vegas 64. Max Homa, 63. Niklas Nørgaard, 62. Rasmus Højgaard, 61. Sahith Theegala, 60. Lucas Glover, 59. Sergio Garcia, 58. David Puig, 57. Thorbjorn Olesen, 56. Andrew Novak, 55. Mackenzie Hughes, 54. Aaron Rai, 53. Nicolai HøjgaardPGA Championship players ranked 52-31The next group of players performed well in 2025 and are coming into this week with some confidence. Michael Kim played exceptionally well in the first part of the season to reach No. 54 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).Harris English and Brian Harman are two winners on the Tour this season, but their length off the tee may not help them this week.Rickie Fowler has a cool fact associated with Quail Hollow, per stat guru Justin Ray. He has the second-lowest score at this golf course behind McIlroy. In 45 rounds, Fowler is 47-under, which is only 55 strokes behind the reigning Masters winner.We are getting to the nitty gritty in our rankings. These players are strong contenders.Players ranked in this section: 52. Kurt Kitayama, 51. Rickie Fowler, 50. J.J. Spaun, 49. Michael Kim, 48. Tom McKibbin, 47. Harris English, 46. Dean Burmester, 45. Cam Smith, 44. Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, 43. Si Woo Kim, 42. Byeong Hun An, 41. Adam Scott, 40. Maverick McNealy, 39. Gary Woodland, 38. Brian Harman, 37. Taylor Pendrith, 36. Davis Thompson, 35. Robert MacIntyre, 34. Harry Hall, 33. Keegan Bradley, 32. Denny McCarthy, 31. Wyndham Clark PGA Championship players ranked 30-16Now that we are in the Top 30, these are the players who could contend at Quail Hollow.This section includes multiple PGA Tour winners, major champions, and players who have contended many times in 2025.LIV Golf's Joaquin Niemann is extremely talented but has not finished inside the top 15 in 23 major starts. He has won three of the seven events for LIV Golf in 2025, but it does not correlate to the major championship weeks.Niemann's best finish at this tournament was a T23 in 2022. Last year he was T39.Hopefully, Jason Day will stay healthy enough to play at Quail Hollow because, like McIlroy, he plays well there.He won this tournament in 2015 and was T43 in 2024. In eight starts at Quail Hollow, though, he has a win and three additional top 10s. Another Wanamaker Trophy may emerge if the Aussie can put it together for four days.All of the Georgia Bulldogs in this section have won in 2025. Harris English, Brian Harman, Russell Henley and Sepp Straka all have wins under their belts. Straka won the Truist Championship last week to give him his second victory of the year, which puts him above the rest of his Dawgs.Will that success give him a hangover this week?Lastly, Brooks Koepka is on this list because he has not finished inside the Top 25 in a major since his third PGA Championship victory at Oak Hill in 2023.Players in this section: No. 30 Akshay Bhatia, No. 29 Keith Mitchell, No. 28 Min Woo Lee, No. 27 Daniel Berger, No. 26 Tony Finau, No. 25 Joaquin Niemann, No. 24. Jason Day, No. 23 Corey Conners, No. 22 Sam Burns, No. 21 Sungjae Im, No. 20 Tommy Fleetwood, No. 19 Russell Henley, No. 18 Sepp Straka, No. 17 Patrick Reed, No. 16 Brooks Koepka Top 15 Rankings for 2025 PGA ChampionshipFinally, here are the 15 guys we think will be in contention on Sunday at Quail Hollow. These are players in really good form or are known to turn it up during a major championship.15. Jordan SpiethJordan Spieth wants to join Rory McIlroy and complete the career grand slam in 2025. Since 2017, the former Texas Longhorn has tried to complete the grand slam, with the PGA Championship being the last major he needs.His best finish at the PGA Championship came in 2021 when he was T4. Last year, he was T43, but fought his wrist injury. Now that Spieth is healthy, he has begun to find form again, making him someone to watch this week.14. Shane LowryYes, Shane Lowry lost heartbreakingly last week to Sepp Straka, but do not count out this man. He is so strong in major championships, especially at difficult golf courses. Lowry has 10 consecutive at the PGA Championship and six top 25s in that same timeframe. He also has three top 10s in the last six years.Lowry finished T6 last year, and his best finish at this tournament was T4 in 2021.He has been so consistent in 2025 that it is only a matter of time before he wins his next individual title on the PGA Tour.13. Patrick CantlayWill 2025 be the year that Patrick Cantlay finally breaks through and wins a major championship? He was T53 last year at the PGA Championship, but his best finish came in 2019 with a T3.Cantlay's downfall is his putting. He has not putted well in 2025, which will be a struggle at Quail Hollow. However, a Top 15 finish is in the cards for him.12. Viktor HovlandViktor Hovland is high on this list, but still really inconsistent. He won the Valspar Championship earlier this year, but since then, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy has played more up-and-down golf.His best finish at the PGA was a T2 in 2023; last year at Valhalla, he was solo third.The putter is heating up for the Norwegian, which will help him at this golf course. If his ball striking continues to be as good as it has been, watch out for him. Even without Hovland's best stuff, he has already proven he can win, so will he shock this week?11. Tyrrell HattonThe next LIV golfer on this list is Tyrrell Hatton. He won on the DP World Tour in 2025 and finished inside the Top 15 at Augusta National. Last year at the PGA Championship, he was T63, but his best finishes were T10 in 2016 and 2018.In his last appearance at Quail Hollow, the Englishman finished third. He has length with his irons and great touch with his flat stick. His game fits this track well, so he could be the next LIV Golf player to win a major.10. Hideki MatsuyamaHideki Matsuyama has not missed a cut at the PGA Championship in his 12 starts. Last year, he was T35, and his best finish was T4 in 2016. He plays well at Quail Hollow, another place where the Japanese golfer has not missed a cut.Matsuyama has not missed a cut in a major since 2019, so it seems he will play all four days and could finish inside the Top 10.9. Collin MorikawaCollin Morikawa already has one Wanamaker Trophy on the shelf from his 2020 win, but could 2025 be the year he wins his second?He also has two top eights in this tournament. Morikawa was T4 in 2024 at Valhalla, but shot a 71 to put him out of the hunt. The two-time major winner has the talent to get the job done, but it likely will not be this week.8. Jon RahmJon Rahm is the second-highest ranked LIV Golf player on this list. The 2023 Masters winner only has one result outside the top 10 in 2025: a T14 at Augusta National.He has never finished outside the Top 10 in 19 LIV Golf starts, but where does that line up in terms of major championship production? Since he joined LIV, Rahm has one top 10 finish in a major, and this year could be the second time he gets one.7. Justin ThomasThe two-time PGA Championship winner has found something in his game during the last few weeks on Tour.Justin Thomas won at the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters and was T2 with Lowry at last week's Truist Championship. The former Alabama Crimson Tide golfer looks much more comfortable with his game, which could help him as he eyes his third Wanamaker Trophy.6. Ludvig ÅbergLudvig Åberg won the Genesis Invitational in February, but it seems like he has gone cold since then. He has not played Quail Hollow in a competitive tournament, and in his first PGA Championship, he missed the cut.However, I would not worry about that finish at Valhalla because he has already shown the world how consistent he is. Åberg's irons and short game have been the most inconsistent part of his game in 2025.If he can clean it up, the former Texas Tech golfer could contend in another major, but the big three in Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau are just too hot right now.5. Justin RoseJustin Rose is my biggest surprise of the week, so do not let his withdrawal last week affect your decision to pick him. At 44, he needed to watch his energy.He has finished runner-up in the last two majors at Augusta National and last year's Open. Not to mention, he plays Quail Hollow well.Rose has three top-5s at this track and four top-10s in his last five PGA Championship starts, with the fifth being a 13th.His major record is impeccable, and he should not be overlooked.4. Xander SchauffeleThe reigning PGA Championship winner seems to be searching in 2025. His rib injury put him back to start the season, so Schauffele has not been the usual well-rounded player people know him for.He needs to regain some confidence, and a strong performance at Quail Hollow will benefit him in the future. In two starts at this track, he finished second. This week, he could finally put it all together in 2025 and contend.3. Scottie SchefflerThe top-ranked player in the world is No. 3 on this list as Scottie Scheffler comes into the second major with just one victory under his belt. Scheffler won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson with a 31-under total score.Last year, he was T8 at Valhalla even after his arrest on Friday morning. His best finish was at Oak Hill in 2023.Scheffler has little experience at Quail Hollow, which could harm him this week. He only played it at the President's Cup, and he went 0-3-1 that week.Never count out Scheffler, though; he is far too talented, and that win in Texas was big for his confidence.2. Bryson DeChambeauBryson DeChambeau is the best LIV Golf player in that league. He was dynamite at Augusta National, battling Rory McIlroy for a Green Jacket. However, a poor round on Sunday cost him his third major.DeChambeau does have major championship golf figured out, though. He won his second U.S. Open at Pinehurst last year as he took down McIlroy. The 31-year-old recently won LIV Golf Korea earlier in May, so he still has form.He has some experience with Quail Hollow, including a ninth and fourth-place finish before he left for LIV. Last year, DeChambeau finished second at Valhalla to Schauffele.His length is made for Quail Hollow, and his right-to-left ball flight is also perfect for this week. It will likely be another battle between McIlroy and DeChambeau on Sunday.1. Rory McIlroyTo no one's surprise, Rory McIlroy ranks No. 1 on this list. Coming off his Masters win could cause him problems, but at the same time, it likely took off a lot of the pressure.Not to mention, McIlroy and Quail Hollow are like best friends. He is 102-under overall in 13 starts at this golf course. He is 55 strokes lower than the second player, Rickie Fowler.The Northern Irishman has 10 rounds of 66 or lower in North Carolina too, including a 61 and 62. He has four wins at this venue, including last year's Truist Championship.This is his favorite course for a reason, and his experience will give him his fifth victory here, and his third Wanamaker Trophy on the shelf.More Golf: Tiger Woods Makes Statement ahead of PGA Championship
