PGA Tour Pro Takes Rory McIlroy's Side in Masters Controversy with DeChambeau
@Source: newsweek.com
Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau spent the day together Sunday at The Masters. Both gentlemen were trying to win their first Green Jacket.DeChambeau crumbled while McIlroy had a rollercoaster kind of day, prevailing to win The Masters and complete the career grand slam.Afterward, the LIV Golf captain claimed that McIlroy did not speak to him throughout the round. It appeared as though DeChambeau was bothered by it, but fellow PGA Tour player Byeong Hun An took the Northern Irishman's side on X, formerly known as Twitter."He seemed upset about this. Not sure if some contexts cut out or something. But I'm not going to expect my competitor to talk to me or talk back," An wrote.An questioned if the video was cut to make it seem like DeChambeau was upset.Fans responded to An's tweet asking how he would prefer DeChambeau to answer the question. The PGA Tour pro is one of the more active guys on the social media app, so he responded."I might be misunderstanding his tone, but he doesn't sound too pleased with Rory's reaction," An wrote. "First of all, I have never been in that situation, so I don't know what it feels like. But I would have just added, he didn't talk to me, he seemed to be in the zone, he did what he had to do I guess. That's why I was questioning whether his answer was cut out."The video was edited because the Crusher G.C. did elaborate on his answer."[He] didn't talk to me once all day...," the two-time major champion said, "he was just like — just being focused, I guess..."Nevertheless, DeChambeau had an edge to him as he answered questions. Of course, he had just blown his chances at a Masters victory, so maybe he deserves a pass.The two-time U.S. Open winner shot a final-round 75 and crumbled to finish tied for fifth with Sungjae Im at 7-under.An's comments seemed sufficient though. When someone is trying to overcome a massive hump like McIlroy, it does not feel weird that he stayed in his bubble the whole day.Could you imagine a starting quarterback chatting with his counterpart during a Super Bowl? Or how about Tiger Woods talking with Phil Mickelson during a Sunday at the Masters?When they first teed off, McIlroy and DeChambeau shook hands, and it seemed amicable at least.DeChambeau won the U.S. Open last year, passing McIlroy on the 72nd hole.Maybe some of the feelings come from what may be a growing rivalry between the faces of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.Of course, DeChambeau is a social butterfly, but maybe McIlroy had to do what he did to get the job done, and it seems silly to judge him for it.It will likely not be the last time DeChambeau and McIlroy meet in a major championship this season as they are two of the strongest competitors in either league.More Golf: Rory McIlroy Hints at Winning All 4 Majors This Year, Here's Why He Can
