PGA Tour Rookie Wins in 4th Career Start, Makes Tiger Woods Look Smart
@Source: newsweek.com
Tiger Woods took the golf world by surprise when he signed the relatively unknown Karl Vilips as the first ambassador for his Sun Day Red brand. But it didn't take long for the young Australian to prove that the 15-time major champion just had his eye on the ball.Vilips won the Puerto Rico Open in just his fourth PGA Tour start. It is only the 12th time that has happened since 1970, according to golf statistician Justin Ray.The 23-year-old was in contention throughout the tournament and took the lead after 54 holes. He left no doubt in the final round, carding an 8-under 64 to finish at 26-under and win by three strokes over fellow PGA Tour rookie Rasmus Neergaard-Peteresen.His final round score is the best of his young PGA Tour career. His previous best score was 65 and he had done it twice, three days ago in the first round of the Puerto Rico Open and in the second round of the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, his first event of the season.The Puerto Vallarta event was also his debut as ambassador for Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red brand. His signing was announced a few days earlier, surprising many fans due to the Aussie's short career in professional golf.However, Karl Vilips is a star in the making, having enjoyed a stellar career in amateur golf and shining in his first and only season on the Korn Ferry Tour. Clearly, these attributes did not go unnoticed by Woods and Sun Day Red executives.Vilips made no secret of his surprise at winning so early on the PGA Tour. But he also claimed to have much bigger goals."If you told me less than a year ago when I was at Stanford that I would be a PGA Tour winner at this point in my career, I think I would be a little surprised," Vilips told the media after the final round. "But I think I've just been so true to the process and everything that my team has me doing that it shouldn't be a surprise when I make the putt on the last hole. But we've got to keep moving forward and try to win at an even higher level."The Puerto Rico Open is an opposite event, so it does not grant its winner all the benefits of a regular event. However, it did qualify Vilips for the PGA Championship and guaranteed him his PGA Tour card through the 2027 season.In addition, the 300 FedEx Cup points that came with the title vaulted the Australian into the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings. In the world rankings, Vilips climbed 140 spots and is now ranked 106th.More Golf: PGA Tour Reveals The PLAYERS Field with Legendary Trio Pairing
