It took 43 years and more than 17,000 rounds of golf, but The PLAYERS Championship finally witnessed its first three-eagle round. And you've probably never even heard of the guy who did it.Chandler Phillips is such an unknown on the PGA Tour, he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page yet. But the second-year Tour pro made his first time around TPC Sawgrass a memorable one during Thursday's first round. He began his day on 10, and birdied the first two holes of his PLAYERS career. But that wasn't good enough for the 28-year-old, as he quickly birdied a third time on his sixth hole before chalking up his first eagle of the round on his seventh, the par-5 16th. That put him at 4-under at the turn. But his round was just getting started. He second eagle of the day came on the par-5 2nd, when he chipped in from just off the green. He second eagle of the day came on the par-5 2nd, when he chipped in from just off the green. That shot had tied him with Lucas Glover atop the leaderboard. But he played his next six holes at 3-over, including a double bogey on the par-3 8th.But another par-5 awaited on his final hole of the day. It is the longest hole on the course, the 601-yard 9th.Following a 300-yard drive, he unleashed a ridiculous 301-yard approach shot to within 4 feet of the pin and finished off the round with a tap-in for his record-breaking third eagle of the round.Yet, it may not have even been his best shot of the day. Phillips holed out for that first eagle back on 16, from 71 yards out.He finished the round with a 4-under 68, two shots back of Lucas Glover, J.J. Spaun and Camilo Villegas, and one shot behind five other golfers, including Rory McIlroy. The Texas A&M alum was ranked 162nd in the FedEx standings coming into this week, and has never finished better than third in 38 tourneys on Tour. But he does have one Korn Ferry Tour win on his record and did just well enough in 26 PGA events last year to keep his PGA card for 2025.And because of that, he now owns one of the best rounds The PLAYERS Championship has ever seen, and his name will forever be remembered as the first to put up three eagles on one scorecard. If he can finish it off and earn his first PGA victory, then it will truly be a week he'll never forget.More Golf: Rory McIlroy ridiculed by PGA Tour pros, Ernie Els scoffs at his notion
