Pickleball Greats Or Just 'Internet Personalities'? Google’s Identity Snub Of Waters, Johns Sparks Debate
@Source: timesnownews.com
Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns – two of pickleball's most renowned faces – have been classified as internet personalities instead of professional pickleball players by search engine giant Google. Waters, however, is not worried about the identity crisis as she does not look herself up on the internet. The PPA Tour No. 1 said she is working on the content side to build her brand. In another freakish identity crisis, pickleball stars Catherine Parenteau and Hunter Johnson have been identified as “Canadian tennis player” and “American tennis player” respectively, due to their past as tennis players. “I haven’t seen that, but I guess I don’t look myself up on the internet," Waters told Her Campus writer Ginger Koehler. “I’m a little flattered that it said that because it means I must be doing a pretty good job on social media. I’ve definitely been working on the content side because I know that’s a great way to build my brand.” Waters is least worried about Google identifying her as an internet personality, as she is active on social media where she has managed to build a robust identity based on her sheer exploits on the PPA Tour – where she has won 154 titles - 52 titles in singles, 52 in mixed doubles, and 50 in women’s doubles - at the age of 18m, making her the most prolific player in the women’s segment of the sport. But Google's unwillingness to identify Waters as a pickleball player is quite outrageous and bound to raise questions about their intention. The term “internet personality” is usually associated with those who have made names for themselves by building their presence on the web. But that is not the case for Waters. She is first a champion pickleball player before a social media personality. Her rise as an international sensation is a natural ascendancy following her exploits on the pickleball courts. It is her ability to play pickleball, her athleticism, and her insane stroke-making that often make her go viral. She has 1.2 lakh (120,000) followers on Instagram. That Google's naming policy is quite discriminatory is evident from the fact that athletes from various other sports have been identified by their respective disciplines – such as Ilona Maher being labelled “American rugby union player” and Coco Gauff “American tennis player.” Johns, who is himself an accomplished pickler and Anna Waters’ mixed doubles partner, has also been identified as an internet personality. Johns, the former No. 1 in singles and currently the top-ranked player in doubles, has won over 183 PPA Tour titles, including 123 gold medals. He has also achieved 21 Triple Crowns – winning singles, doubles, and mixed doubles at the same event.
