Out of the Flying Fijians 32-member squad announced yesterday, there is no specialised full-back. However, Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne told SUNsports that there are some utility players in the squad who could don the No.15 jumper in the Test matches against Australia and Scotland. “It will be shared among these players,” he said yesterday. “Vilimoni Botitu played really well at fullback against the All Blacks last year, (Sireli) Maqala also played in that position but he is incredible at centre. Salesi Rayasi has played in that position in Super Rugby, but we will explore our options.” he said. Other players who could play at fullback include winger Selestino Ravutaumada, Caleb Muntz and Isaiah Armstrong- Ravula. Byrne said the squad named has flexibility but the full-back position is one factor they would need to look into. “Understanding the back-field coverage in the modern game is a really big challenge. “With the way the game is being played at the moment, we need people with the knowledge of how to cover the back field.” Byrne added. He said the team has got experience but they would have to work on how to ignite themselves with the backline. “With the three players (Botitu, Rayasi, Maqala), the team will have the opportunity to work on that area,” he said. Byrne has named Tevita Ikanivere as captain of the Flying Fijians. “I am looking forward to rekindling the relationship of captaincy with Tevita, he is a young leader. “He led well last year and to take the role from Waisea Nayacalevu is a huge shoes to fill but he’s got it,” he said. Byrne said the coaching panel knows the expectations from the public. “There is always pressure; this is the number one sport in the country. “There is pressure on me to coach but I have faith in the players I have chosen.” The 66 year-old added the players know they need to play well to inspire the younger generation and the public. “We will do everything we can to make sure we can help our people. “Pressure comes naturally, expectations come naturally and we really look forward to come into this game,” he said. Byrne said he is excited of the mix of players and there are good leaders that can guide in the field. “We did not name amazing players like Semi Radradra because he is currently moving to Japan and a lot others due to their unavailability. “We have chosen our side for the tests and we look forward to working with them,” he said. The Flying Fijians takes on Australia on July 6 and faces Scotland on July 12 in Suva.
