Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday, congratulating him on his re-election and reaffirming India’s commitment to enhancing ties with the United States. The meeting comes just weeks after Trump was sworn in for his second term. Modi himself made history by becoming the first Indian leader in 60 years to win three consecutive terms.“I am delighted to see you back in the White House. I congratulate you on behalf of 140 crore people of India,” Modi told Trump. “People of India gave me an opportunity to serve as PM for the third time. In this term, I have the opportunity to work with President Trump once again for the next four years, and it is a great pleasure. I can say from my past experience of working with you in your first term, we will continue to advance India-US strategic partnership with the same bond, same trust and the same excitement.”A Relationship Built on TrustModi spoke of past interactions between the two leaders, particularly referencing high-profile public events that had a significant diplomatic impact. “I am happy that as soon as I entered this room, my friend reminded me of Ahmedabad and the cricket stadium where we held a big rally and the events that we did in Ahmedabad—Namaste Trump—and Howdy Modi in Houston,” he said. “The echo of those events can still be heard today in India and the world.”The Prime Minister praised Trump’s personal involvement in strengthening bilateral relations. “President Trump has made an immense personal contribution towards strengthening our relationship, making it more comprehensive and attaining unprecedented heights,” he stated.Commitment to Accelerated ProgressLooking ahead, Modi expressed his confidence in achieving new milestones in the India-US partnership. “I firmly believe that, in your second term, we will work with even more speed. As I have promised the people of India that in my third term, we will work at three times the speed, I firmly believe that with President Trump, during the next four years, we will work with twice the speed than we did in his first term.”The meeting highlighted the commitment of both leaders to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors, including trade, defence, and regional security.A Strategic VisitModi’s visit to the US marks a significant diplomatic engagement, being one of the first foreign leaders invited to Washington since Trump’s re-election.
