Poor decision making haunts KOBs in Lions Cup
@Source: kawowo.com
The Lions Cup lived up to its billing, ending in an 11-all draw. The heavy downpour didn’t have much effect on the game, as both teams were comfortable on the wet ball. Although the game had quite a number of scrums, there was also continuity from both sides, playing short balls and piling on the phases. Joseph Aredo and Aaron Ofoyrwoth’s tactical kicking was on point. In the first half, Heathens managed to string a few passes together, sending Tony Okello to the corner for the 5-pointer. They then added 3 more points from Ofoyrwoth’s boot, giving them an 8-point lead. Just when things weren’t going for the Blue Army, Calvin Gizamba who started at full back, slotted in a drop goal to pull 3 points back. Just like Okello in the first half, Karim Arinaitwe similarly scored in the same corner, with Gizamba adding a penalty which was equalled by Malcom Okello who came off the bench to tie the game 11-11 at full time. There was no late drama for Josiah Ssempeke who missed his last-ditch effort. Decision, Decision, Decision! Right before the end of the first half, KOBs had the opportunity to level the game or even go ahead. Less than 10 meters to the Heathens’ try line, the boys in blue applied pressure through two scrums that were both collapsed by the yellow machine, but on the second penalty, they decided to scratch and go, to the bewilderment of everyone. “A lot of decision-making was done wrong by the players and the leadership on the pitch and that’s something will have to talk about a little more, for guys to calm down and listen to the captain, or at the very least, look at the bench and see what we are telling them,” KOBs coach Timothy Mudoola noted. Senior player Adnan Mutebi brought in some communication to the line out while Trevor Maina exhibited maturity in the second half when the rain had subsided. “Lineouts were a bit shaky, especially when there was a downpour. Unfortunately, my first-choice hooker (Edrine Ssempebwa) wasn’t getting it right. Later in the game, it got better especially when some of the subs went on,” Mudoola added. In addition to the national team captain, Byron Oketayot coming off the bench to see out the 11-all draw in the dying minutes, the game kicked off with 11 players at both ends, who are currently engaged in the national team preparations for the July Rugby Africa Cup. If that performance by the two most legendary clubs in the land is anything to go by, then we are in trouble as a nation come July.
