Popular café and sports hub hit by money trouble set to reopen

A café and sports hub closed last month amid financial difficulties is set to reopen its doors. The Underhill Hub in Mumbles initially opened in July 2023. However, in July 2025, it was announced that the community hub would be shutting down owing to financial pressures. At the time, Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart said that the council had done “everything we legally can” to help the company behind the hub. However, just over a week later, Swansea Council and Mumbles Community Council stepped in to reopen the facility's sports pitch and changing rooms . Council leader Rob Stewart made the announcement during a cabinet meeting held on July 17 explaining that the joint venture wanted to open the facilities at Underhill Park in early August, until the end of 2025. This did come into fruition when the facility's all-weather pitch and changing rooms were re-opened on August 11. Pay and play sessions were restarted on August 18 as well. Officials from both the organisations said that the trouble for the hub began when it was given an unexpectedly high rateable value in August 2024 which they said resulted in business rates bills north of £93,000 for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 financial years. They said that the figure was reduced to £56,000 after retail and hospitality business rates relief was given to them, however it was still too high for UMC which ultimately led to the facilities closing down. Though the council's announcement of the reopening of the sports pitch and changing rooms at the facility was welcomed, concerns still remained about the sports hub and the café. Now after efforts from both Swansea Council and Mumbles Community Council, the sports hub and the café are set to reopen on September 1. The building itself features a café open to the public, a meeting room and changing rooms for sports activities. For the time being, Mumbles Community Council will be operating the sports hub and the café at the site. Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart said: "It's great news for local residents that the hub and cafe will be back open. "I'm grateful that the community council continues to work with us to manage these facilities during the coming months. "The swift progress so far gives us all some breathing space to develop opportunities for a permanent operating model to be found." Cllr Will Thomas, chair of Mumbles Community Council, said: "I thank the staff of both councils for working so hard to get the facilities back open. "A lot of work has taken place behind the scenes and I'm sure it is appreciated by the community." The sporting facilities are used by Mumbles rugby club, Mumbles Rangers and Newton Athletic football clubs and more recently Mumbles Cricket Club and other cricket teams following the installation of an artificial wicket.
