Nigeria’s Super Falcons hold world No. 22 Portugal 0-0 in a WAFCON 2025 friendly. Chiamaka Nnadozie and Francisca Ordega shine, while Ashleigh Plumptre returns in a resilient display.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a resilient performance in their 2024 WAFCON preparations, securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw against world No. 22 Portugal in an international friendly on Monday night.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and veteran forward Francisca Ordega were the standout performers, while defender Ashleigh Plumptre marked her long-awaited return to the squad.
The result keeps Nigeria unbeaten in their WAFCON build-up, following victories over Algeria (twice), Cameroon, and now this draw against Portugal.
Nnadozie and Ordega Steal the Show
Chiamaka Nnadozie was a rock in goal, thwarting Portugal with remarkable saves, including two one-on-one stops, as observed by Pulse Sports Nigeria.
At the other end, Francisca Ordega silenced critics of her WAFCON inclusion with a near player-of-the-match display.
The Saudi-based forward struck the bar with an audacious 45-yard effort in the final 10 minutes and nearly set up Ifeoma Onumonu for a late winner.
Despite Portugal’s dominance in the first half, Nigeria grew into the game, showcasing their fighting spirit and creating scoring chances in the second half.
Plumptre’s Return Bolsters Defense
The match also saw the return of superstar defender Ashleigh Plumptre, who made her first appearance since the 2024 Olympics.
Coming on as a second-half substitute in the 60th minute for Rinsola Babajide, the 27-year-old played 30 minutes, displaying glimpses of the defensive solidity Nigeria had missed.
With the Super Falcons holding firm against a strong Portuguese side, the goalless draw signals their readiness to reclaim WAFCON glory in Morocco from July 5-26, 2025.
Justine Madugu and his Falcons will now switch attention to the game against rivals Ghana, their final international friendly, before the road to Mission X begins in Morocco.
