Pregnant 'drug mule' Bella Culley reveals baby's gender as she pleads with court

Teenage "drug mule" Brit Bella Culley has urged authorities to consider her side of the story – as it's revealed she's expecting a baby boy. The 19-year-old faces a life sentence in a Georgian prison for allegedly smuggling cannabis into the country. During a recent hearing in Tbilisi, Bella, who has previously claimed to have been forced by torture , addressed the judge: "I hope you understand my story through my eyes. I never thought something like this would happen to me." Bella's mum, Lyanne, was also present in the courtroom and appeared visibly emotional after hearing the news that her daughter is expecting a boy, following recent medical tests. Asked about Bella's condition outside the courtroom, Lyanne stated: "She's feeling pregnant." As she left the courtroom, Lyanne reportedly offered her daughter reassurance, saying: "I'll come and see you tomorrow, I love you." Prosecution lawyer Vakhtang Tsalughelashvili labelled Bella's alleged offence "heavy", whereas her lawyer, Malkhaz Salakia, maintained there was no concrete evidence the crime was committed deliberately. The prosecution insisted there was insufficient new evidence presented by the defence to secure Bella's release, arguing she should remain in prison due to the risk of her committing the crime again, reports the Mirror . Defence solicitor Mr Salakia stated: "Bella will become a mother soon, she is expecting a boy. I want her to feel this motherhood in freedom. It's a moment of her becoming a mother for the first time in her life – she turned 19 this June. "Since the crime committed is not connected to Georgia, and her family has been here – father before and now the mother is here – they are here to look after her, and there is no possibility of influencing the witnesses because they are police and officials." He added: "She can be assigned to visit the police department two times per month or everyday, however the judge decides – she will fulfil her duty. It's summer, and a pregnant woman needs special hygiene in the month of July – we are offering a plea agreement of 50,000 [Georgian Lari], which will be paid immediately and we ask her immediately to be set free." However, Judge Giorgi Gelashvili ruled that no new evidence had been presented by the defence – except that it's hot in prison – to alter the previous decision, so Bella would remain in custody. Another hearing in the case is scheduled for early September. The judge clarified that if there is a plea agreement then an earlier date could be arranged. Bella, from Billingham, Teesside, disappeared in Thailand before reappearing in Georgia where she was arrested at Tbilisi International Airport in May. She stands accused of smuggling cannabis and hashish into the country. Outside court, Bella's lawyer confirmed his client was physically feeling OK.
