Premier League release statement after 'appalling events' during Liverpool FC parade

The Premier League has reached out to Liverpool Football Club to offer their "full support" following a distressing incident on Water Street at the conclusion of the trophy parade that resulted in a man being detained after a road traffic collision involving several pedestrians. Police were alerted around 6pm on Monday, just as Liverpool's city-wide bus tour was drawing to an end on Blundell Street, along the city's waterfront. Merseyside Police have confirmed the arrest of a 53 year old white British man from the local area. The number of people injured in the collision is currently unknown. The Premier League has acknowledged the situation, committing to work alongside their new champions to provide assistance where needed, reports the Liverpool Echo. Their statement expressed: "Everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected. "We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident." A spokesperson for Liverpool FC stated: "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident." A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the ECHO: "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre. "We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday May, 26 following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. "Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them." An air ambulance landed near the Liver Building following the incident, while The Strand has been cordoned off and trains out of the city centre have been temporarily cancelled. Liverpool began their city-wide parade at around 2:30pm from the Allerton area before making their way north towards the Childwall Fiveways roundabout and then on to Tuebrook, before heading into the centre via Islington, Leeds Street and The Strand. A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre, following reports of a road traffic collision. "We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.
