Prince George's ‘allegiance’ sparks rivalry between parents as Prince William ‘tries to stay out of it’

Prince George's "allegiance" has led to a rivalry between his royal parents, but Prince William is eager to "stay out of it".
Prince William, who took over the role of patron for the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) from the late Queen Elizabeth in 2016, is reportedly keen not to see his team finish bottom of the table.
Wales plays UK rivals England this Saturday in the Six Nations Championship at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Awkwardly, however, his wife, Kate Middleton, is the royal patron for the Rugby Football Union in England.
In fact, the Mail's Richard Eden has claimed the young Prince George's rugby "allegiance" has been a "bone of contention". William said about the rivalry: "It's become quite the thing in the house. [Catherine] is quite into it. I'm trying to stay out of it."
Yet, the BBC reports that Wales has lost 16 international matches in a row and currently sits at the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, England hopes to win the title, while France, which will host Scotland on the same day, are the current favourites.
William is thought to be a huge rugby fan. In January, he sent the team a personal message in which he showcased his Welsh language skills. This was before Wales' match with France in the Six Nations.
He wrote: “Wishing @welshrugbyunion the very best of luck tonight against France, and throughout @sixnationsrugby! Amdani!" The word 'Amdani' translates to “go for it”.
In 2023, William, previously Vice Royal Patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, visited France with George to support the team as they clashed with Argentina in the Rugby World Cup.
Yet, the prince isn't the only famous George who loves rugby; a British racing driver recounted a story about once being in attendance at the same match as the future king.
In 2024, George Russell revealed that he once thought people were shouting 'George' at him at a rugby match, only to realise that they were cheering for the young prince.
“There's actually a funny story,” he explained. “I was at a rugby match watching England play and suddenly everyone in front of me turned around and were looking up. And they were screaming, ‘George, George, Prince George, Prince George’.
“And I thought, ‘this is a bit strange’. Like all these people screaming at me. And then I turned around and the real Prince George was standing behind me. So that kind of made sense.”
