His rich legacy continues to inspire generations. Now, fans have a special chance to relive one of his greatest moments as Purple Rain returns to theatres for just one night on March 5, exclusively at Dolby Cinemas, presented by Warner Bros. Discovery and Dolby. “Purple Rain reimagined in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for Dolby Cinema is a celebration of Prince’s genius and enduring legacy. Devoted and new fans alike prepare to be exhilarated by an unforgettable and unparalleled performance from one of music’s greatest of all time,” Jed Harmsen, Head of Cinema and Group Entertainment at Dolby, said in an official statement. The 1984 rock musical drama, which marked Prince’s acting debut, will be presented in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. This version offers even better picture and sound quality than the 40th anniversary 4K disc that was released in May 2024. That disc was restored from an 8K scan of the original 35mm film. It was colour-graded in HDR but was adjusted to meet the standards of Dolby Vision. In this exclusive screening, the film has been enhanced to provide an even richer visual and audio experience. “Fans will have the opportunity to fall in love with his royal badness all over again, while new generations can be introduced to his lasting influence in a stunning restoration that offers elevated visuals and transcendent audio,” the release teases. Prince plays The Kid in Purple Rain, a young singer trying to make his way in the music world while competing with a rival performer. Along with acting, he also created and produced the film’s music. Directed by Albert Magnoli (who later became Prince’s manager) and co-written with William Blinn, the movie features unforgettable performances by Prince and The Revolution, The Time, and Apollonia 6. The film’s soundtrack was a huge success as it stayed at the top of the Billboard album chart for 24 consecutive weeks. Purple Rain made over $70 million at the box office during its first run which made Prince an international superstar. It won several major awards including the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score and a Grammy Award for Best Album of Original Score. After Prince passed away in 2016, the film was re-released in AMC Theatres.
