A professional women’s soccer player is recovering from heart surgery after she collapsed on the field and was rushed to the hospital.
Savy King, a defender for Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles following the incident during the second half of a match against the Utah Royals on May 9.
Doctors who evaluated King discovered a heart abnormality, according to a statement from the team.
“She is now resting and recovering surrounded by her family, and her prognosis is excellent,” the statement said.
King’s family also released a joint statement through the club.
“On behalf of our entire family, along with Savy, we have been so moved by the love and support from Angel City players, staff, fans and community, as well as soccer fans across the country,” the statement said. “We are blessed to share Savy is recovering well and we are looking forward to having her home with us soon.”
King collapsed in the 74th minute of the match. Several players were visibly distressed as she was tended to by medical personnel for about 10 minutes. She was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher.
There were 12 minutes of stoppage time added to the match, which Angel City won 2-0.
King, 20, was the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NWSL draft by expansion Bay FC and played 18 games for the club. She was traded to Los Angeles-based Angel City in February.
