‘Proper Tools a Must for Farmers’

Farmers must have the proper tools and infrastructure to thrive, said Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, during his recent visit to the Mataqali Sasa beef farm in the Northern Division on Thursday. His visit reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering rural livestock farmers with vital support aimed at boosting productivity and long-term sustainability in the beef sector. The farm, located in Sasa Village, Macuata, was a beneficiary of the 2023/2024 Commercial Agriculture Development Programme and recently received fencing kits from the Ministry of Agriculture. These resources are expected to improve livestock security, facilitate better farm management, and enhance operational efficiency. “The success of beef farming in the Northern Division depends on two key factors, feed and fencing,” said Mr Tunabuna. “Farmers must have proper infrastructure to manage their livestock effectively.” He stressed that support to rural areas goes beyond equipment; it helps build resilient agricultural systems that sustain livelihoods and drive economic growth. Mr Tunabuna also urged local farmers to form cooperatives to strengthen their market presence, improve bargaining power, and create stable supply chains for both local and export markets. “By working collaboratively, farmers can secure better pricing and greater access to markets,” he said. “This ensures their hard work leads to real economic benefits for their communities.” Farmer Setoki Draunibaka welcomed the ministry’s support, saying the fencing kits had already made a noticeable difference. “This support has been invaluable, especially given the location of our village,” he said. “We’ve improved herd management, reduced livestock losses, and can now plan for growth.” The Ministry of Agriculture is committed to prioritise livestock infrastructure, training, and cooperative development to ensure farmers across Fiji receive the tools they need to compete and succeed in the market.
