'Put up a fence...or a huge high net' say readers to golf club with lost 18th green

A North Wales golf club is facing a unique predicament - it's missing its 18th hole. The 113 year old Holyhead Golf Club has been instructed to close its 18th green by Anglesey Council, leaving officials stunned. The unexpected notice was issued after a neighbour complained about stray balls landing on their property. North Wales Live readers are amazed that the complaint has been upheld. The club, which first opened its doors in 1912, has now initiated an appeal to raise £75,000 for the construction of a new green situated further from the neighbouring land as the club does not want to become a 17-hole course. The Isle of Anglesey County Council stated that its actions were aimed at ensuring the health and safety of both golfers and those affected by the golf club's activities. A spokesperson for Holyhead Golf Club explained: "A neighbour said golf balls were leaving the boundary of the course and going onto their property. He has evidence balls were going into his garden and he raised the issue with the council." However, the spokesperson also highlighted the club's financial constraints, saying, "It's quite a struggle already. We are trying to bring joy and happiness to the community (through golf)." The club fears that reducing to a 17-hole course could deter visiting players and render 18-hole competitions void. Holyhead Golf Club aims to reopen as an 18-hole course by May 1, 2025, following the completion of landscaping work. Commenter CGX says: “The neighbour moved there knowing the green was next to their property. I suspect the council's hands were tied and they had exhausted all other options.” LEE11 thinks: “They should just put up a fence and put up trees, nothing to stop them doing that. The neighbour whose property is probably not as old as the golf club, should have known when they were buying their house that there would be a risk of golf balls." Jaybyrne suggests: “What an absolute joke. The course most likely pre-dates the housing anyway. They should sell the land, build flats on it that look directly into the neighbours house and see what they say then. However, I don't understand why the club doesn't just put up a huge high net to stop the balls, which loads of other clubs around the country have?” FlintshireIan replies: “Northop Golf Club had to redesign part of its layout because of issues with residents who had bought houses in the middle of a golf course. It's a funny old world.” Daibach2465 is amazed: “Why do the council keep pandering to these people? They moved in next door to a golf course and now they're surprised they have stray golf balls!” Dynasflin agrees: “Why doesn’t the council get a backbone? They knew what was next door when they bought the property. Seriously beggars belief!” What do you think about the situation? Should the golf club have to take responsibility or should the house owner have known what they were getting themselves into? Have your say in our comments section.
