Doha, March 26 (QNA) - Qatar Museums (QM) and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba) will present the co-curated exhibition LATINOAMERICANO. Modern and Contemporary Art from Malba and Eduardo Costantini Collections, the first large-scale showcase of modern and contemporary Latin American art in the WANA region, opening this April. As part of the Qatar Argentina and Chile Year of Culture, the exhibition will be on view from 21 April to 19 July 2025 at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ).
Using the collections of Malba, Eduardo F. Costantini, and Qatar Museums, the exhibition will offer a panoramic view of the artistic production of a continent through groups of works by key artists from 1900 to the present day. It will consist of approximately 170 works by more than 100 artists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Paraguay, Mexico, Venezuela and Uruguay across painting, photography, video, sculpture, installation, and archival documentation.
"Qatar has firmly established itself as a global destination for those seeking extraordinary experiences in art, culture, and heritage. Aligned with Qatar's National Vision 2030, we take pride in serving as a cultural hub at one of the world's crossroads, using the arts to establish dialogue, bridge cultures, and promote mutual understanding. That is the mission of the Years of Culture initiative, which has been strengthening Qatar's relationships worldwide since 2012 and is proud to support the LATINOAMERICANO exhibition as part of this year's partnerships with Argentina and Chile," said Sheikha Reem Al-Thani, Acting Deputy CEO of Exhibitions, Public Art, and Rubayia at Qatar Museums.
Curated by Issa Al Shirawi, , and Commenting on the occasion, Issa Al Shirawi, Curator and Head of International Exhibitions at Qatar Museums, stated, "It is a great opportunity to collaborate with Malba to bring Latin American art and culture to the Arabian Gulf through an exhibition of this scale, especially during the Qatar Argentina and Chile Year of Culture. From pioneering modernists to contemporary visionaries, the exhibition highlights how Latin American artists have challenged narratives, redefined traditions, and influenced artistic movements worldwide. At Qatar Museums, it is important to continue presenting multiple global art histories bringing stories and new perspectives of art to our audiences from around the world." Maria Amalia Garcia, Curator in Chief at Malba, said, "Since the late 1980s, Eduardo F. Costantini has had a clear objective: to gather key pieces of modern Latin American art according to a sustained collecting strategy. His passion for art and his commitment to disseminate and share this legacy prompted him to found Malba. LATINOAMERICANO honours the history of the museum and shares it with new audiences in Qatar." Eduardo Costantini said, "With a focus on Latin American modern art, my goal has always been to gather the best pieces from the best period of the region's central artists. It is a great joy for me that these works arouse interest in cultures so distant from our own. This collaboration with Qatar Museums reflects our commitment to making Latin American art known and expanding it to an international audience." Teresa Bulgheroni, President of the Malba Foundation comments, "This first exchange is a milestone in the museum's history, as it underscores the museum's commitment to its international profile and its mission to bring Latin American art to global audiences. The collaboration with Qatar Museum not only broadens the reach of our works, but also opens new avenues for cultural dialogue between Latin America and the Arab world. We are confident that this partnership will strengthen the ties between our institutions and contribute to the mutual enrichment of our artistic communities."
LATINOAMERICANO will critically explore and redefine Latin American art within historical narratives and theoretical frameworks. Organised into five thematic sections, the exhibition will examine the region's diverse identities, urban development, moments of societal transitions, and the transformative artistic practices unique to Latin America.
On display will be key pieces from Malba's collections, such as Autorretrato con chango y loro (1942) by Frida Kahlo, Baile en Tehuantepec (1928) by Diego Rivera, Rompecabezas (1967) by Jorge de la Vega, Juanito dormido (1978) by Antonio Berni, Omi Obini (1943) by Wifredo Lam, Armonia (1956) by Remedios Varo, Escena callejera o Calle de Paris o Constructivo (1930) by Joaquin Torres-Garcia, La composici?n con tonos verdes (1939) by Roberto Matta, and El viudo (1968) by Fernando Botero, among many others. A number of these masterpieces are newly acquired by Malba and will make their debut in this exhibition, offering an exclusive first glimpse. These works will be presented alongside works from the collections of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and the future Art Mill Museum by artists such as Alice Rahon and Mathias Goeritz, among others.
In the courtyard of the National Museum, Marta Minujin's Sculpture of Dreams (2023) will be installed. First exhibited in Times Square in New York City, the installation is comprised of 16 blow-up amorphous pieces that form a whimsical passageway.
In addition to the exhibition, LATINOAMERICANO will feature robust public programmes, ensuring continued engagement with the themes of the exhibition and the broader cultural dialogues. These programmes will offer deeper insights into the artists' practices and the diverse narratives explored within the exhibition.
Qatar's Years of Culture initiative announced the Argentine Republic and the Republic of Chile as its partner countries for 2025 earlier this year. The 2025 partnerships will showcase shared influences - from cuisine to language - while establishing new collaborations across the initiative's core focus areas of cultural preservation, creative industries, social and economic development, and innovation.
Programmes to be featured this year include performances, exhibitions, sporting and culinary events, photography projects, residency schemes, volunteer trips, and more. (QNA)
