Quadruple Railway Line Proposed Between Karjat And Panvel To Ease Suburban Traffic
@Source: news18.com
In a major move to decongest Mumbai’s overburdened suburban rail network, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has proposed a quadruple railway line between Karjat and Panvel. The Rs 492 crore project aims to ease travel for thousands of commuters in Navi Mumbai and Raigad, two regions witnessing rapid urban growth.
Currently, the Karjat-Panvel stretch operates with only a single up and down line, leading to frequent delays and severe overcrowding, especially during peak hours. The proposed plan includes adding two new tracks to the existing pair—making it a total of four lines. This expansion will allow simultaneous operation of suburban locals and long-distance trains, thereby improving punctuality and reducing congestion.
The project is more than just a solution to daily travel woes. With the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport set to drive further development in the region, the new railway lines will offer seamless and faster rail connectivity between Panvel and Karjat. This is expected to significantly benefit areas like Uran, Navi Mumbai, and the industrial belts nearby.
Despite the alignment spanning just 39 kilometres, it passes through several dense green patches, requiring thoughtful environmental assessments. Officials involved in the planning have emphasised the need to ensure minimal ecological disruption while executing the project. Once cleared, the route will also support improved freight movement by freeing up capacity for cargo trains, which currently face delays due to the limited track infrastructure.
As pe the source, the blueprint has already been submitted for approval and discussions with both central and state government bodies are at an advanced stage. Budget provisioning, statutory permissions, and tender processes are being fast-tracked to ensure timely implementation.
The quadruple line is a key component of Mumbai’s larger vision to strengthen its suburban rail infrastructure and reduce the city’s growing dependency on road travel. As more residential and commercial hubs emerge in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), particularly towards Karjat and Panvel, efficient public transport becomes critical.
Once operational, the project will not only cut down travel time but also enhance safety and comfort for lakhs of daily passengers. With dedicated paths for both passenger and freight trains, the region is set to witness a smoother and more efficient rail experience—bridging the gap between urban expansion and sustainable transport infrastructure. This initiative, when completed, will mark a significant leap toward modernising Mumbai’s suburban railways while meeting the demands of a fast-growing city.
