Randolph junior Achal Agnihotri won his first tournament with an impressive 2-under 70 to win the individual medal at the Morris County Tournament Wednesday at Flanders Valley Golf Course in Flanders.
With the win, Agnihotri became the first Randolph golfer ever to win the MCT.
“I came second in the NJACs last year, but glad I was able to get it done today. My season has gone okay so far as I spent a lot of time during the off season working on my full swing that I began neglecting my putting. Recently I’ve been paying alot of attention on my putting and today it all clicked,” said Agnihotri, who bogeyed his first hole (fifth) and responded with near perfect golf the rest of the way highlighted by an eagle on the par 5, 487-yard 11th hole (seventh).
“I just tried staying as patient as possible and things fell in place. I eagled 11, and few more birdies down the line helped me stay in it.”
Morristown senior and Notre Dame commit Liam Pasternak, last year’s defending state champion and NJ.com Player of the Year, along with Madison senior Alex Patel tied for second after 1 over 73s.
Five players tied for fourth with 3 over 75s: Delbarton senior Jake Kurtzman, Montville junior Dylan Kaufman, Butler senior Adam Avery, Madison junior Blake Steele, and Chatham sophomore Roger Rice.
The defending state team champion and last year’s top-ranked team by NJ.com - Delbarton (309) - won their first tournament of the season in a nail-biter with runner-up Mendham (311).
Six teams came within 14 strokes or less of the winner.
Randolph (315), Madison (316), Mountain Lakes (316) and Chatham (316) rounded out the top six respectively.
The Green Wave, No. 3 in the latest NJ.com Top 20 rankings, had all four of their golfers in the top 16 including junior Grady Gore (77, 11th), senior William Kramer (78, 14th) and senior Matthew Lu (79, 16th).
24 schools (21 teams) with 94 players competed on the par 72, 6,429-yard layout.
