Rangers get final Champions League assessment from the Jury as Russell Martin headaches laid bare

ANDREW NEWPORT : It might actually be a smart move. With so many new players and a new style to implement, Panathinaikos will have little idea what to expect. But now that Martin is taking the covers off his new-look side, they have to deliver. GAVIN BERRY: I can't help thinking of Celtic's Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland under Ange Postecolgou three years ago when everything was a bit last minute and they were caught cold. It feels a bit like that with Rangers this summer and it's a big ask to progress. MICHAEL GANNON: It does seem a slightly strange schedule. Rangers have played plenty of bounce games behind closed doors but they could have done with some more tests closer to the real thing. We’ll find out on Tuesday whether the plan has worked or not. ANDREW NEWPORT : I suspect Jack Butland will return in goal with James Tavernier skippering the team. He'll be in at right-back alongside central defenders John Souttar and Nasser Djiga, with Max Aarons filling it at left back. Joe Rothwell will dictate play from the No6 slot with Nico Raskin and Mo Diomande in front. If Thelo Aasgaard fails to shake off his knock, it will be Nedim Bajrami and Djeidi Gassama on the wings, with Danilo leading the line given Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers' late return to training. GAVIN BERRY: I reckon it will be the same XI that lined up against Dunfermline in a bounce game minus new boy Thelo Aasgaard who picked up an injury in that game. So Butland, Tavernier, Djiga, Souttar, Aarons, Rothwell, Raskin, Diomande, Gassama, Bajrami, Danilo MICHAEL GANNON: There are some big calls required. Max Aarons might be needed at left back while Joe Rothwell should be in midfield with Nico Raskin and Mo Diomande. You’d think Gassama will be lobbed in and maybe Oscar Cortez on the other flank. Danilo could get the not up top given Dessers and Igamane uncertainty. ANDREW NEWPORT: Not necessarily. It remains unclear if the Northern Irishman will hang around longer than his current deal, which ends next summer. While the Celtic faithful wait for news on that, someone at Parkhead really has to be keeping an eye on the long-term vision. Signing up talented potential with a view to developing them for a couple years down the line is a smart move. But Rodgers could do with a couple more ready-made recruits. GAVIN BERRY: Rodgers dropped not-so-subtle hints during his first spell with his choice of words and supporters picked up on it. They weren't wrong when they sensed all was not well between the Irishman and the board's ambition and, with 12 months left on his deal, have every right to be concerned. MICHAEL GANNON : It’s nothing new. Rodgers has the final say on signings and he’ll see these as low risk punts suggested by his scouts. The likes of Benji Nygren was identified the same way and he’s first team ready. The important thing is he gets properly backed to bring in Champions League ready stars. ANDREW NEWPORT : Let's hope so. It would be great to have as many Scottish teams as possible in the group stages of Euro competition but Hibs couldn't have landed a harder draw than the slick Danes. But in fairness, the club have certainly backed David Gray with some decent signings this summer. Fingers crossed it gets them through. GAVIN BERRY: It's not impossible but it's a tough task. Their manager Thomas Thomasberg being so dismissive of David Gray's side should hopefully fire Hibs up a bit but the Danes have European experience which Hibs lack. If they can return with a draw or narrow defeat it will give them a chance. MICHAEL GANNON : Keeping the tie alive going back to Easter Road would be superb, but Hibs are right up against it. Midtjylland are a strong outfit and they’ve scudded a Dynamo Kiev and Slovan Bratislava already in pre-season already. It doesn’t get much tougher at this stage.
