Ravichandran Ashwin Honoured By President Droupadi Murmu; Receives Padma Shri Award - Watch

Ravichandran Ashwin was handed the ultimate honour months after his retirement from international cricket on Monday (April 28) after being given the Padma Shri Award, India's fourth-highest civilian award. Ashwin was presented the special honour during a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the national capital, New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hailed Ashwin for the special honour. "Congratulations to @ashwinravi99 on being conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Hon'ble President of India @rashtrapatibhvn, honouring his remarkable achievements and an illustrious career with #TeamIndia," said BCCI. Alongside Ashwin, Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh was also honoured with the Padma Shri award. Sreejesh retired from the sport after playing a key role in helping India win the Bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. For those unversed, Ashwin bid adieu to his cricketing journey with Team India after a legendary career that lasted mroe 14 years. The spin-bowling all-rounder made his debut for India in the ODI and T20 formats in 2010 and later played Test cricket in 2011. Over his career, Ashwin played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is for India. He was part of the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy winning squads. Ashwin is India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history with 537 scalps to his name. Across all three formats, only Anil Kumble (953) has more wickets than Ashwin (765) to his name.. Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) at the Gabba. The star spinner was not part of the playing XI and made the announcement in the post-match press conference and did not stay back for the last two matches of the series.
