RCMP confirms one person killed, two injured after vehicle strikes Granfondo cyclists (Penticton)

UPDATE 3:25 p.m. Penticton RCMP has confirmed a crash involving cyclists competing in the Okanagan Grandfondo was fatal. Mounties said the collision on White Lake Road near St Andrew’s Drive involved a motor vehicle and cyclists participating in the race. “Tragically, one cyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two additional cyclists sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment,” said the RCMP in a news release. “The RCMP extend their deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all those impacted by this devastating event.” Some cyclists are still finishing the course. They are being followed by safety vehicles. The investigation continues. Motorists are being reminded to avoid the crash scene by taking alternate routes. UPDATE: 1:55 p.m. A Grandfondo cyclist was reportedly killed when a vehicle drove into several cyclists on the race route Sunday morning. According to the husband of a cyclist who witnessed the crash, a vehicle crashed into three cyclists on White Lake Road near St. Andrew's Road. The woman who witnessed the crash performed CPR on one of the injured cyclists, but she said the injured cyclist died at the scene. Two other cyclists were also seriously injured, she said, but their condition is not known at this time. Castanet has reached out to the Penticton RCMP and the Grandfondo organizers for confirmation about the death, but no details have been provided at this time. A City of Penticton spokesperson would only confirm that an "incident involving the Okangan Granfondo" occurred Sunday. White Lake Road remains closed in the area, as police continue to investigate what they've called a "serious motor vehicle incident." ORIGINAL: 11:55 a.m. A serious crash Sunday morning has closed down White Lake Road, south of Kaleden, where hundreds of cyclists are riding during the annual Granfondo race. In a brief press release Sunday morning, Const. Kelly Brett of the Penticton RCMP says police are on scene of a “serious motor vehicle incident” on White Lake Road, near St. Andrew's Drive. “Police are asking motorists to avoid the area and make alternate travel routes while the scene is being managed,” Const. Brett says. While police made no mention of the nature of the crash, the crash occurred on the route of the Okanagan Granfondo, a 155-kilometre bike race that kicked off Sunday morning. Police have not disclosed any injuries that those involved may have suffered.
