Liverpool may need to brace themselves for another transfer assault from Real Madrid as reports emerge that the Spanish club is considering a move for midfield powerhouse Alexis Mac Allister.
Spanish daily newspaper MARCA claims that the Argentina international is on the Champions League winners’ shortlist as they look to add options to their midfield, which has struggled this season following the retirement of German veteran Toni Kroos.
Aged 26, Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago and has become one of the first names on the team sheet. His impressive performances have included one in which he scored against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage earlier this campaign.
That was one of six goals scored in 44 games to date in 2024/25, a season in which he is on track to add his first ever Premier League title to his personal trophy cabinet to go alongside a World Cup winners medal from 2022 and join his 2020 title from Argentina with Boca Juniors as his second league triumph.
Valued at €90 million ($102.2 million) by Transfermarkt, any move to take Mac Allister to the Estádio Santiago Bernabéu would be a major transfer deal for both clubs. Real Madrid has avoided paying such substantial fees in recent years, instead acquiring key players like Kylian Mbappé on free transfers.

Mac Allister to follow Alexander-Arnold
The midfield sensation is not the only Liverpool player to be linked with Real Madrid, with right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold widely expected to join Los Blancos on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract on June 30th.
While Liverpool has already secured the services of star striker Mohamed Salah on a new deal until 2027, with captain Virgin Van Dijk also expected to announce a new contract imminently, Alexander-Arnold has not moved any closer to extending his stay.
The full-back has played alongside Mac Allister since the latter joined the club in 2024, with Alexander-Arnold having come through the youth system at Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold is now expected to turn down a higher salary offer from Liverpool to instead move to Spain, with his arrival likely to be Real Madrid’s marquee signing this summer as they look for a long-term successor for Dani Carvajal.
Mac Allister on his future
Mac Allister is under contract at Anfield until 2028, but has not shied away from openly discussing his future in recent months despite the success the Reds have enjoyed on the field under coach Arne Slot.
Speaking to AS in December, the Argentine didn’t rule out a future in La Liga as he said, “why not? It is a country that I like very much and I have visited it several times, and, above all, because of the language and culture, it is very similar to Argentina”. He went on to admit that “without a doubt, I would like to play in Spain one day, but at the moment, I’m very comfortable at Liverpool and I’m not thinking about what might happen in the future”.
Mac Allister, whose brothers Francis and Kevin, as well as his father Carlos, were all professional soccer players, is among Europe’s most elite midfielders and will face high demand for his services should he look to move on from his time on Merseyside with Liverpool.
