Reasons for Nigeria, Cameroon double-header international friendlies
@Source: promptnewsonline.com
By Harry Awurumibe, Editor, Abuja Bureau The double-header international friendly matches between the Super Falcons and Indomitable Lionesses during this month’s FIFA women’s international match calendar will be used by both Nigeria and Cameroon to prepare their senior women’s football teams for the forthcoming CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals in Morocco. Although Cameroon did not qualify for the 2024 WAFCON holding in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2025, the Cameroonian football governing body, Federation Camerounaise de Football (FECAFOOT) may have accepted the two-legged friendly matches against Nigeria to keep the Lionesses busy ahead of their 2026 WAFCON qualifiers second round matches against Algeria in October. With the Super Falcons heading to Morocco in July not only to participate in the biggest African women’s football competition but to try to reclaim the African title currently held by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hierarchy could not have settled for a lesser team than to pitch the former African champions with their eternal rivals dating back to 34 years ago. Aside from taking part in the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco in July, Nigeria also has a date with West African neighbours Benin Republic senior women’s football team in October with the first leg billed for Stade de l’Amitiè in Cotonou and return leg tie in Nigeria in the final qualifiers of the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco. As Nigeria and Cameroon fancy their chances of reaching the 2026 WAFCON final where the four African representatives will be picked for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, both the NFF and FECAFOOT leaderships have decided to test the readiness of their teams ahead of their crucial international matches later in the year. Meanwhile, Super Falcons and Indomitable Lionesses are not new in the football arena as both clashed for the first time in the final of the two-legged African qualifier ties of the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in China with Nigeria defeating Cameroon home and away to qualify for the maiden edition of the biggest world women’s football tournament. Still in their formative years, Nigeria’s Super Falcons led by late coach Paul Ebiye Hamilton thrashed Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses 2-0 in the first leg of the final qualifying round on June 15, 1991 at the iconic National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos while the return legJune 30, 1991at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo, Yaoundé with 30,000 fans in attendance, saw Nigeria wallop Cameroon 4-0 to qualify for the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China on 6-0 aggregate scoreline. Prompt News reports that Super Falcons and the Indomitable Lionesses will play the first match of the double-header international friendlies on Friday, May 30, while the return leg will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 respectively just as the FIFA Window will run from May 26 to June 3, 2025 with a maximum of two international friendly matches.
