Diarmuid Healy scored five points as Lisgoold inflicted a first RedFM Hurling League Division 3 defeat on Blarney.
Last year’s Co-op SuperStores IAHC winners made it three wins from five as they were 2-22 to 1-14 winners away to the mid-Cork side on Thursday night, with the goals coming from Mark Hegarty and Liam O’Shea while James O’Driscoll weighed in with three points.
Blarney had been in a share of the lead but their defeat allowed Newcestown to push clear at top thanks to a 2-25 to 0-18 victory against Blackrock on Saturday. Luke Meade featured for the West Cork side, whose goals came from Eddie Kenneally and Niall Kelly.
Newcestown now sit on nine points, two ahead of Courcey Rovers, Blarney and Bride Rovers, with Ballinhassig and Lisgoold a point further back.
In Division 2, goals from Richie Long and Ryan McCarthy were key as Killeagh held off a Ballincollig comeback in a cracking Division 2 clash on Friday night.
The East Cork side were in control midway through the second half when they led 2-19 to 0-19 before the Collig landed five points in a row from play through Brian Keating (two), Adam Wills, Cian O'Driscoll and sub Tadhg O'Connell. A Ryan McCarthy free pushed the gap back out to two as the clock wound down.
Full-back Patrick O'Brien put his body in the line to deny O'Driscoll a late goal and while Keating converted a 63rd-minute free to take his tally to 0-7, Killeagh had done enough.
A highly entertaining first half had finished 0-13 apiece with Keating and Sean O'Neill nailing some fine scores for the visitors but Richie Long, who grabbed 1-4 overall, David Buckley, scorer of 0-4, and Dylan McCarthy, who finished with 0-6, three from play, causing problems.
The physicality of Ryan McCarthy at wing-forward and the half-back line of Andy Walsh, Dinny Walsh and George Walsh Wallace was also notable. David O'Sullivan's long-range free-taking kept Ballincollig ticking over early in the second half before those goals from Long and McCarthy gave Killeagh the momentum.
While Midleton now hold a four-point lead, Killeagh are in a three-way tie for second with Erin’s Own and Newtownshandrum.
Erin’s Own had gone three from three but they suffered their first loss as Jamie Coughlan scored eight points and Ronan Geary six for Newtown as they beat the Caherlag side by 0-26 to 4-13. Barry Óg Murphy, Matt O’Riordan, Maurice O’Carroll and Conor Lenihan scored the Erin’s Own goals.
