Patrick Reed has secured a return to The Open Championship after finishing runner-up at the Asian Tour's International Series event in Macau.Reed will join fellow LIV Golf players Jason Kokrak and Carlos Ortiz at Royal Portrush for the fourth Major of the year thanks to the Macau event being part of the Open Championship Qualifying Series.Ortiz had even more reason to celebrate, claiming his second Asian Tour title after a thrilling showdown with Reed. Despite leading heading into the final round, Reed couldn’t hold off Ortiz, who surged ahead with a brilliant six-under-par 64 on Sunday.“A little frustrating,” said Reed. “I didn't make many putts,” he said of his final round. “Had the case of lip outs for two days. So that's unfortunate. When you do something like that, it's just hard to win golf tournaments. Put myself in position, and yeah, I hit the ball plenty well enough. 16 greens today, had a decent amount of looks, just, you know, just lipping out and burning edges.“So unfortunately I wasn't able to get the win. But anytime you can play bogey-free on Sundays, always positive really. To go and finish solo second, get a spot in The Open, yeah, it means a lot.”Reed’s appearance at Royal Portrush will mark his return to The Open after missing last year’s edition at Royal Troon, breaking a run of appearances stretching back to 2013.Like many LIV Golf players, Reed has seen opportunities to qualify for Majors diminish due to the league’s events not offering Official World Golf Ranking points. However, as a former Masters champion, he retains a lifetime exemption to Augusta and can now add The Open to his 2025 schedule. While Reed, Kokrak, and Ortiz punched their tickets to The Open, it was heartbreak for Sergio Garcia. The 45-year-old Spaniard fell just one shot short of qualification, finishing fourth behind Kokrak.Garcia has been striving to return to The Open after missing out in 2023 and 2024, ending a remarkable streak of appearances dating back to 1997.
