Rematch’s beta test on Steam is boasting impressive numbers, beating the life of EA FC 25 and Football Manager 24 with its highest player count. Releasing on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on June 19, Rematch is currently in the midst of the final beta test before release, and it’s certainly making waves. The 72-hour beta test boasts an all-time peak player count on Steam of almost 160,000, according to SteamDB, the second-highest all-time total of any soccer game on the platform, behind only Football Manager 2020 (190,000). Due to conclude on May 31, the beta test is giving players one final opportunity to try out the game for free before release, along with allowing the developer to test server strain and squash any bugs. Releasing a soccer title in a market dominated by EA Sports and Sports Interactive is certainly not an easy feat, though the early signs are promising for the Sloclap title. Of course, these numbers don’t paint the full picture of the market as the numbers do not include other platforms like Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, where the player count is significantly higher than on Steam, but it does show there is room to make an impact. EA FC 25 is also approaching the end of its lifespan, while the latest entry in the Football Manager series is already well over a year old following the cancellation of Football Manager 25 in February. The Rematch beta test is also free-to-play, which will certainly attract more players, and it remains to be seen how many splash out $29.99 to purchase the full title. Rematch’s niche could be where it is shining, with the fast-paced 5v5 approach, with each player controlling a single character, varying from the full-team control on the likes of EA FC.
