Councillors in Short Heath have launched a petition in response to DX lorries 'wreaking havoc' on the streets surrounding its Willenhall depot. Councillor Joshua Whitehouse, Amandeep Garcha and Poonam Gill said it was crucial to ‘act now' in order to 'prevent any fatalities'. READ MORE: Fury as lorries 'block Willenhall roads' as residents claim 'an accident waiting to happen' A meeting was called last week after a video showing haulage vehicles blocking Ashmore Lake Way and Clarkes Lane sparked safety concerns. It was attended by over 40 residents, the emergency services, Walsall Council and business owners in the area. The Short Heath councillors said DX declined their invitation. At the meeting, residents’ concerns mainly centred around the highway obstruction, the speed at which the lorries drive, noise, pavement parking, lorries blocking access to homes and businesses, and fears of accidents and near misses. The emergency services said that they struggle to respond to calls because the lorries block the ambulance hub and fire station. There was some hope that the issue would be resolved with the announcement of a new DX East Midlands hub, reducing the number of lorries using the Willenhall depot, but the issue still persists. The Short Heath councillors said there was a clear sense of anger and frustration towards the company and have promised to write to them. They have also asked for residents to send any evidence of poor driving to them which they will forward to the traffic commissioner. In a joint statement, they said: “We want to thank everyone who came to the meeting, we’ve all got a common goal to stop these lorries from causing havoc on our streets. “We encourage everyone to sign our petition and report any incidents of dangerous behaviour to the police, the council and the traffic commissioner. “We appreciate how large the company is, however we will not tolerate blatant disrespect to our roads, residents and our community. “We need to act now to prevent any fatalities and can only do this with the support of DX. “We were disappointed they declined the invite to the meeting, but following conversations with the council, we are confident that we will continue to reach out to them with the aim of reaching a positive resolution. “Ultimately, this dangerous activity can’t continue, and we want to prioritise protecting local residents and businesses.” DX has been approached for a statement. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We have spoken to the company concerned and our partners to try and assist in resolving the issues which have been raised."
