Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in conversation with US-based podcaster Lex Fridman, weighed in on the famous India-Pakistan’s rivalry on the cricket field where he cited the Indian team’s superior winning record over the arch rival.
While speaking on the podcast, PM Modi was asked about the famous rivalry and who has the better team.

He said that he feels that sports has the power to energise the world and bring people together. While answering the question, the Prime Minister said that he doesn’t know the intricacies of the game, but the “results speak for themselves.”
“I think sports have the power to energise the entire world. The spirit of sports brings people across nations together. That’s why I would never want sports to get discredited. I truly believe sports play a major role in human evolution. They’re not just games; they connect people on a deeper level,” he said.
“Now coming to the question of who’s better or not. When it comes to the techniques of the game, I’m not an expert. Only those who specialise in it can be the judge of it. They can only decide which team is the best and which players are the best. But sometimes, the results speak for themselves. Just a few days ago, India and Pakistan played a match and the result revealed who was the better team. That’s how we know,” he added.
India vs Pakistan has always been considered as a marquee game, given that both nations square off only during ICC events. Both the countries recently faced each other in the ICC Champions Trophy, where Virat Kohli’s century powered India to a six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the group stage match.
Ultimately, Rohit Sharma-led team India posted a 4-wicket win over New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium to clinch the coveted ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as they chased down a target of 252 in 49 overs.
Later, Fridman also asked the Indian Prime Minister about the best footballer in his view, to which he said that in the 80s it was Diego Maradona and currently everyone would say it is Lionel Messi.
“It is absolutely true that many regions in India have a strong football culture. Our women’s football team is performing really well, and our men’s team is progressing really well. If we talk about the past, in the 1980’s, one name that always stood out was Diego Maradona. For that generation, he was seen as a true hero and if you ask today’s generation they’ll immediately say Lionel Messi,” he added.
Under PM Modi’s tenure, sports has been given a major boost with the country striving to be a sporting nation which also includes India potentially hosting the 2036 Olympics.
PM Modi’s conversation with Fridman is his second appearance in podcasts. This is his first appearance in a podcast hosted by an international personality. Earlier in January this year, he appeared in a podcast with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath.
