Revealed: Gautam Gambhir Didn't Oppose Abhishek Nayar's Sacking

As the Indian cricket team undergo a major transformation with the support staff being overhauled by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), there is a ruckus over assistant coach Abhishek Nayar's sacking in the wake of India's Test series defeats to New Zealand and Australia, both home and away. However, in a new twist to the latest development resulting in Nayar's sacking, head coach Gautam Gambhir did not oppose the sacking of his assistant, reported Hindustan Times. It was Gambhir who appointed Nayar as part of his support staff right after becoming the head coach. Gambhir and Nayar previously worked together when they were with IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders as coaches. "Gambhir did not oppose (to Nayar's sacking). He had to go through a lot of negotiations to bring Ten Doeschate and Morkel on board. There was no way he was going to let them go this early," a BCCI source told Hindustan Times. The BCCI was adamant about cutting Gambhir's influence following India's 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand at home and 1-3 defeat to Australia Down Under. Gambhir, however, did not protest the sacking of Nayar. As per BCCI insiders, he was more concerned about saving the jobs of bowling coach Morne Morkel and the other assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate. Like Nayar, who was appointed last July, both of them were appointed based on his recommendations. Nayar's contract was to run till May 31. "The board officials took feedback from senior cricketers and some were not happy with Nayar's role inside the dressing room. He was informed about the non-renewal of his contract a few days ago," the report quoted the source. Along with Nayar, fielding coach T Dilip and Strength and Conditioning coach Soham Desai left their positions. They completed more than three years in their respective roles. They could not continue in their capacities since the BCCI has set a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), capping the tenure of support staff to three years. If media reports are to be believed, Adrian Le Roux, a renowned Strength and Conditioning coach who worked with the Sourav Ganguly-led Indian team during the team's runners-up campaign at the 2003 World Cup, is likely to join the team.
