FOXBORO — Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson is relying on his teammates to get his mind back on football after he spent the early portion of the offseason workout program mourning his father, The running back’s father, Robert Stevenson, died in March at 54. “It felt great just being in the huddle with the guys and just being back in the building, just going through meetings and the weight room,” Rhamondre Stevenson said Monday. “It’s great to be around them. They kind of get my mind off things and just give me focus on football. So, yeah, I love being around.” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said he was in “constant communication” with Stevenson while the running back stayed back in Las Vegas to be with family. Stevenson was appreciative of the support from the Patriots’ new coaching staff. “I’ll keep the dialogue to myself, but it meant a lot,” Stevenson said. “Just the whole coaching staff just still having my back, checking in on me. (Running backs coach Tony Dews) even came to Vegas for a little bit. So, you know, all that means a lot to me, a lot to my family. And you know, I love it.” Stevenson made a diving highlight catch during Monday’s practice on a pass from Patriots QB Drake Maye. “There was a man alert there. I know I have to win,” Stevenson said of the play. “My guy Drake threw it up to me. It’s like the first ball this whole OTA. So I’m glad I caught it, honestly.” Stevenson is one of few players on offense who has a history being coached by offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Stevenson was a rookie in 2021, McDaniels’ last season as Patriots offensive coordinator before he left to become head coach of the Raiders. McDaniels returned to his post as OC this offseason, and Stevenson said he’s comfortable in the familiar system. “Josh and Bill Belichick yelled at me a lot my rookie year for the same playbook,” Stevenson said. “So I kind of got it drilled into me. Just need to just go over a little bit more.” The offense won’t be a carbon copy of what Stevenson knew in 2021. McDaniels said Monday that he was introducing elements even he had never coached before.
