Rickie Fowler's Masters chances hanging by a thread as PGA Tour star set to miss opening major
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Rickie Fowler is facing a race against time to secure his place at the Masters, with the PGA Tour star needing a win from his next two spots to secure a spot at Augusta National Whilst he is yet to miss a cut on the PGA Tour in 2025, Fowler has struggled to find his best golf and currently sits 105th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). This means he is currently absent from the entry list, with the OWGR cut-off point the top-50 for the opening major of the year. Fowler will need to pull off something special to make it, with just this week's Texas Children's Houston Open and next week's San Antonio Open the events left on the schedule before the Masters. The former world No. 4 is well aware that he needs to bag a win in either Houston or San Antonio to secure a spot at the Masters, no doubt a daunting task for someone who is yet to find their rhythm this season. His fall in the rankings can be traced back to a challenging 2024, which saw him secure only three top-20 finishes throughout the year. In contrast, the previous year saw the four-time Ryder Cupper secure his first victory in four years at the RBC Heritage. This victory ensured his participation in the following season's Masters, his first appearance since 2020 at Augusta, where he finished tied for 30th. However, without a strong performance in the next two weeks, Fowler will once again have to miss the trip to Georgia. The 36-year-old is more than aware of the task at hand, having highlighted his absence from the Masters invitation list while participating in TGL. Despite a close final with eventual champions Atlanta Drive GC, Fowler's New York Golf Club fell short of clinching the inaugural TGL title. Having steered the New York franchise to the season finale in last week's semi-finals, Fowler is hopeful that his form on the simulator were transpire onto the golf course "I'm not in Augusta, so I need to play better on the real golf course to work on that," he commented after last week's TGL semi-finals. There is no doubt that the two-day final at the SoFi Center on Monday and Tuesday would have an impact on his schedule ahead of his return to the PGA Tour this week. With the finals wrapping up on Tuesday evening, Fowler had to travel from Florida to Houston, allowing himself just one day of practice around Memorial Park before Thursday's opening round. He'll be hoping this is sufficient preparation, with Fowler playing alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im over the first two days.
