'Rishabh Has High Pain Threshold, But Seeing His Face...': Ravi Shastri Fears Pant's Injury Is 'Serious'

India suffered a heavy blow after ace batter Rishabh Pant had to retire hurt on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England in Manchester after taking a hit on his foot. Pant attempted a premeditated sweep off Chris Woakes, but failed to connect with the ball that crashed onto his boot. Pant looked in searing pain and was taken off the field in a mini ambulance. The BCCI released an update on Rishabh Pant's injury and confirmed that the wicketkeeper-batter was taken to the hospital for scans. There was heavy swelling on Pant's foot, with a small amount of blood, and from the outside, the injury did look serious. Former India coach Ravi Shastri reflected on Pant's injury and said that the 27-year-old has a high tolerance for pain, and given how he was screaming in pain, the injury looked serious, adding that it will get worse overnight. “Just seeing his face, grimacing there. He has a pain threshold that's very high, and for him to be grimacing in pain in that fashion makes it very serious. It can only get worse overnight,” Shastri said on Sky Sports. “When you get up in the morning, it can be really sore, no matter the amount of ice you put. He will be icing it through the night. Let's hope it's not a break or it's not a crack,” he added. Meanwhile, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feared that Pant could have suffered a broken bone. “He hardly put his foot on the ground. He rolled around for 6-8 minutes before the golf cart came in. The immediate swelling was the worry for me. I've had a metatarsal injury myself, and they're small, fragile bones,” said Ponting. “The fact that he couldn't put any weight on it doesn't look good at all. If it's broken, he will be out of the game. If it's not, then they will do anything they can to get him back out there. Hopefully, he doesn't play any more reverse sweeps,” he added. India ended the day 264/4 at stumps on Day 1. Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and Sai Sudharsan (61) hit fifties for India, while KL Rahul made a solid 46. Before being retired hurt, Rishabh Pant played a decent innings of 37.
