Rishabh Pant Made To Regret 'Punjab Ki Tension Thi' Remark; Faces Heat After PBKS Complete Double Over LSG
@Source: timesnownews.com
Rishabh Pant's remarks after the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, seemingly mocking Punjab Kings (PBKS) after he was signed by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) came back to bite him as his poor run of form continued, as his team finds themselves on the brink of elimination. For those unversed, Pant was signed by LSG in the 2025 Mega Auction after he decided to leave Delhi Capitals (DC). The Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise spent Rs 27 crore to sign him, making him the IPL's most expensive player ahead of Shreyas Iyer, who was signed by PBKS for Rs. 26.75 crore just minutes earlier. After being appointed PBKS captain, Pant opened up about the auction and remarked that he was worried that PBKS will sign him due to their budget. The Punjab-based franchise had entered the auction with Rs. 112 crore in their kitty after releasing their entire squad and retaining just two uncapped players (Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh). Before the mega auction in November last year in Jeddah, there were strong rumours that PBKS would sign Pant as they were looking for a captain and a high-profile. These were boosted by Ricky Ponting's arrival at the club, who worked with Pant at the Capitals from 2018 to 2024. However, PBKS did not make a single bid for Pant and instead went the distance to buy IPL 2024-winning captain Shreyas. "From inside, I had only one tension. That was Punjab. Their budget was so high that if you wanted, you could not do anything. They had 112 crore, the second highest was Rs. 82 crore. When Shreyas joined Punjab, I was relieved that I can join LSG now," said Pant in an interaction with Star Sports in January. Rishabh Pant Made To Regret Comments Mocking Punjab Kings These remarks have come back to bite Pant after PBKS beat LSG by 39 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday (May 4). This means Punjab have completed a double over the Pant-led outfit, having beaten them by eight wickets at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow earlier in the season. Fans on social media recalled Pant's statement, who faced heat amid his prolonged poor form with the bat, which has been a key reason behind his team's struggles in the 2025 IPL. The result in Dharamshala means that PBKS are now in second place on the table with 15 points and are set to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. On the other hand, LSG are 7th in the table with 10 points and need to win all remaining matches to qualify. With the bat Pant has had a shambolic season with just 128 runs in 10 matches at an average of 12.80 and strike-rate of 99.2. No other player with more than 55 runs has a scoring rate below 100 this season.
