Riyan Parag's Appointment As RR Captain Met With Backlash, Accused Of 'Nepotism'

Star India batter Riyan Parag, who was on Thursday appointed as Rajasthan Royals’ captain for their first three matches of IPL 2025, received severe backlash on social media after fans claimed that Yashasvi Jaiswal was more suited and deserving of the role than Riyan.
The decision was taken after regular captain Sanju Samson revealed that he would feature in the three matches as a pure batter.
Social media reckoned that Jaiswal was robbed of the position, amidst his consistent performance for the team.
“Jaiswal is killing his career by not hiring a good PR agency. He will end up like Pujara in the test, and Dhawan in the white ball,” a user tweeted on Thursday morning.

Top performer but no one will recognize him.
If he wants to take a good step first leave this Assam Royals. https://t.co/tc4Onggh3A

“Riyan Parag is a perfect example of nepotism in cricket. Retained by RR every season despite not outperforming others, and now gets the captaincy over their brand face Jaiswal, simply because he’s from Assam & RR is playing there,” another user tweeted.

Samson’s finger was fractured after a Jofra Archer ball hit him during the T20I against England in Mumbai, following which he had to undergo a minor surgery in February.
While Samson has been cleared to bat, according to reports, medical and sports science teams at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru have told them to give his fingers some more rest before he begins keeping wickets.
Riyan was Rajasthan’s highest run-scorer in IPL 2024, scoring 573 runs in 16 matches at a stunning average of 52. Jaiswal, on the other hand, scored 435 runs in the same number of matches, at an average of 31.
