A tragic hit-and-run accident in Sowo Village along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, Ogun State, claimed the lives of four schoolchildren, triggering a massive protest that stranded hundreds of travelers for hours. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m, on Wednesday, when a speeding vehicle veered off the road and struck a group of pupils walking home from school. Eyewitnesses reported that the children died instantly, prompting furious villagers to block the highway in protest. The blockade caused severe traffic gridlock, stretching several kilometers, with some commuters abandoning their vehicles to seek alternative routes on foot. Angry youths attempted to lynch the driver, but security operatives intervened, rescuing the driver and taking him into custody. Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), described the crash as a “deeply unfortunate occurrence.” He confirmed that a joint team of TRACE, police, and Nigerian Army personnel was deployed to restore order. “The road has been reopened, and traffic is now moving. Security agencies acted swiftly to calm tensions,” Akinbiyi said. Residents called for speed bumps and pedestrian crossing signs to prevent future tragedies. The victims’ bodies have been moved to a nearby morgue, and the driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
