Road-rage Uber driver learns fate after killing dad of eight on his way to kid's soccer game

An Uber driver who gunned down a father-of-eight during a shocking rush-hour road rage incident has learned his fate as he faces decades behind bars.
Geoffrey Edward Hammond, 48, was found guilty of second-degree murder and attempted murder on May 1 following the horrific 2023 shooting, The Multnomah County District Attorney's office announced.
The shooting left Ryan Martin dead and a bystander wounded on the streets of downtown Portland, Oregon.
The verdict comes after Hammond's first trial ended in deadlock late last year when jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision on the most serious charges.
Despite the deadlock, he was still convicted on other charges including first-degree assault with a firearm and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.
Prosecutors revealed how Hammond was working as an Uber driver when he blocked a lane of traffic during the evening commute outside a hotel in downtown Portland on October 11, 2023.
Martin, 47, described as a 'devoted husband' and father, was reportedly trying to navigate past Hammond's vehicle when the deadly confrontation began.
After Martin made a comment to Hammond about blocking the road, the Uber driver responded by flipping him off.
The gesture caused Martin to exit his truck and approach Hammond's car.
Hammond then suddenly pulled out a gun and shot the father in the chest at point-blank range.
Martin was helpless on the ground with the bullet through his lung and spine, when Hammond attempted to shoot him again - but his gun jammed, according to witnesses.
Witnesses described watching Hammond try to fix his gun while saying, 'You're lucky I didn't shoot you in the heart,' according to the Affidavit.
Video footage captured two minutes Martin lay in the street dying next to the defendant's car while Hammond did nothing to help.
At the same time, a witness Sam Gomez attempted to take a video when he was shot by the suspect in the leg.
Prosecutor Brad Kalbaugh said: 'The Martin family finally has found justice. Nothing Sam Gomez or Ryan Martin did that day warranted Hammond's deadly reaction' after the guilty verdicts.
In May 2023, Hammond filed for bankruptcy owing around $34,000 in credit card debt and unemployed after his finance company closed.
Hammond owns an $890,000 home in Portland's West Hills, a 2020 Mercedes SUV and four firearms according to court records.
He has a total of 18 criminal arrests on his record- spanning from 1994 to 2021, across four different states.
Seven of them pertain to vehicular crimes, including careless driving, exceeding speed zones, improper turning at an intersection, violating speed limits, and speeding on the freeway.
His other arrests include for domestic battery in Illinois in May 1999, simple assault in August 2014, and criminal damage to property in November 2006.
As well as his criminal issues, Hammond has also been embroiled in family problems and legal disputes over his vast inheritance.
The alleged murderer's grandparents, Daniel and Mary O'Brien, amassed a family fortune of $125million across multiple businesses - including properties, hotels, a golf course, nursing homes, fast food franchises, and gas stations chains.
Hammond had previously been entangled in bitter feuds about inheritance among his extended family over the cut of the $125millon that he and his half brother Daniel would get, records show.
He joined a legal complaint against his uncle and his two cousins.
Not only did Hammond fight his family over the alleged mismanaged multi-million-dollar trust, but he also ended up suing the two lawyers he hired to represent him.
